Have i just ballsed up my cpu and mobo?

oh man that's bad

do as rjkoneill says, maybe try and cover the rest of the board with cling film whilst rinsing with TIM remover so you don';t ghet it in any other slots

the cpu should be quite easy to clean though

****UPDATE****

Thanks for all the suggestions i have got hold of some of the remover and cleaned up the CPU pretty well. CPU's dont have the pins they used to :)

Mobo is more tricky, and proving very hard to clean, i have to go to work in an hour so i'll hopefully get it all cleaned up and leave overnight to dry and try again in the morning.

I'll give a further update tomorrow.

Ohh and those cables are well tidy, you want to have seen it yesterday, spaghetti junction a go go!

happen to a friend of mine once, much worse then your case. he gave it to me, took me a long time but i got it cleaned and it worked. I just used what ever i could find in the bathroom. just be patient and take your time, it can be cleaned.

It does look like you put the whole tube on. Rice/PEA size MAXIMUM in future. Good luck with the mobo but I think youll have killed the mobo off tbh even if you do get it clean

it would be more effective to get a mallet and hit the socket multiple times than use cotton buds

have you ever put a cloth in a cpu socket?

judging by your quote i would go as far as to say "no, no you havent" as pins get attracted to cloths

my advice:

thermal paste remover in the socket

tip it so the remnants run out of the socket

put it in the airing cupboard for a few days

- and be more careful

Thanks for trying to make me look small - my point was that using paper towel you could have bits of the paper towel break off and make the situation worse! Using something lint free would help reduce that... plus i don't recall saying putting it IN the socket

but i guess you are just your post count around here and i couldn't possibly have anything to offer here

Isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush.

Used to use this method for removing Dielectric Grease from socket 775 cpu sockets when using a vapochill LS.

i did something similar once.... i got a tin of electrical contact cleaner from RS components and squirted it all over the affected areas...

it worked a treat... took about 10 min to shift all the compound..

You stupid boy! (Cpt Manering) :D Ah no i done something similar before but it wasn't as bad as that, best of luck cleaning it!

Scary stuff. Looked like you'd picked up your chip with paint covered hands o.0

Me, I slapped on the retail cooler with its pre-applied paste.

I then got suspicious, took it off again, had a look... yup, both sides covered in greyness, slapped it back on again without bothering to reapply paste.

Temps still good :D

Seriously, paste and application of same is overrated.

Less enthusiasm on the tube next time all the same :)

I'd personally leave it soaked in isopropyl alcohol (90% or 99%) for an hour. Then clean it and hope it works.

If you used a thermal paste which isn't conductive, I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Isopropyl alcohol is very effective and is very cheap.

How did you manage to put that much paste on! Eyes closed maybe!

^^^^^I would do this!

**** UPDATE *****

Tried it again this morning and still buggered, i have the Isopropyl alcohol and will use a new toothbrush to clean both the CPU and mobo socket with it.

How do i dry the mobo socket though?

Another thing the Antec 200 does not come with a speaker cable, so the damn thing doesn't do any post beeps, is this the norm nowadays or is there a speaker mysteriously built into the mobo somehow!

I dont know what motherboard you have but sometimes they come with a small speeker that you attach to the connecter panel where the power and reset and led pins are. also sometimes they come with a small lcd display of error codes on th3e motherboard.

How do i dry the mobo socket though?

hair dryer on low heat?

The toothbrush and alcohol seemed to do the trick in getting out the last bits.
