Have I made a mistake in choosing AMD over Intel

Upgraded my old Athlon 3000+ system to

Athlon X2 4600+
Asus M2N Sli Deluxe
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)
mine cooler

System is used mainly for Windows aps and as a HTPC. After reading about how easily overclockable the new Intel chips are, I think I have made a big mistake. Am now thinking of selling my Athlon and Mboard on eBay and starting again.

Yes but don't worry, overclock your 4600+ a little 2.8+ and it's more then capable of matching gaming performance at high resolutions with AA/AF so the real world difference is zero... Enjoy your rig... :)

my mate matt just upgraded from a smithfield to a completely new rig, he has E6600, and im sorry to say 'whats the hype about' i see no difference at all in everyday use compaired to my X2, feels like the same system to be honest, yes i know in benchmarks conroe does better and it gets couple more FPS in games, but don't listen to the hype and think its 100% faster, you don't NEED conroe, your AM2 system will be fine :)

are you sure about that? lots of people on this forum have been saying that a c2d6300 with 1 core disabled hammers the crap out of a fx62  looks like conroe is the only way forwards.

It's like swapping a 170mph Porsche for a 190mph Ferrari because it wasn't fast enough....when the speed limit is only 70mph anyway. Or something along those lines.

or you could put that into more relative terms and say that its going from 50mph to 80mph. now you can drive in the 3rd lane

Way to waste money! Did he even try overclocking the rig at all before replacing it?? Seems like a waste to me, my x2 [email protected] is more than adequate for everything I ever do, and my gfx is 8800gtx. Cpu bottleneck must be a myth :p

It is, I fail to see why people are cpu limited in games (unless they have twim 8800s or something) as if you are, then youre settings arnt high enough!

Would you say your opty was a 50mph chip? Something like an xp yeah but not a highly clocked a64

It's always funny reading these sort of threads, how quickly people forget that AMD where miles ahead of Intel for such a long time and not that long ago.

Now it's swung the other way and Intel are on top it's like AMD where never any good, will be very interesting to watch what people say when it swings back towards AMD again

If you're not big into gaming, then you did alright - its a very nice setup :) Unless your overclocking (and for your needs I don't see the point), there's no need to have a Conroe - there's very little in it at stock, from a day-to-day point of view.

If you were overclocking for games I'd be singing a different tune.

Besides, there'll probably be a supercharged new AMD CPU later this year that will fit nicely into your mobo.

Well Ive put it all together and overclocked to 3.2 using 400*8 monstermunchs info temps are 28 idle 57 max load. Wonder what to try next?

The 16 gig .ts 1080p clip now plays smoothly, not sure why though, because when playing on my Athlon rig CPU usage was only at about 50%. It wasnt a codec issue, as they were both fresh installs using vlcplayer.

yeh 185 sorry. is the 285 actually 2 processors on the motherboard?

285 means certified for use in dual systems, I believe its actually physically limited. I.e; you need another 285, cant be done with a 285 and a 185 for example (without a mod I guess). 8xx means certified/geared for 8-way usage.
