An electrician told me to wire my Ring doorbell directly into my outside light just using 18 gauge wire, going from the light direct to the doorbell.

It didn't come with instructions so I did what he said but it didn't work. On further googling, I can now see why as I clearly need a transformer ‍♀️ Will I have fried the doorbell? Thanks

Strange that you sign up for a computer forum(Which the associated business do no sell Ring products as far as i am aware) to ask this rather that Ring support.

Anyway, yes you have probably ruined it. I believe they can be wired to the wiring that is used on an old doorbell but 240v is  i am surprised it didnt catch fire.

It's either completely fried (most likely) or you've overclocked it so much the whole of the UK will hear the bell when someone rings it. BRB getting earplugs.

I suspect its dead Jim.

Probably lucky that it did not have exposed metal parts.

I like how you incorporated overclocking in your reply. Very forum-appropriate!

It failed safely and didn't catch fire, so it's a good design and well built. But I'd be very surprised if it's still functional.

I'd be undecided about whether to have a word with the electrician who advised that or to stay well away from them in case they gave me any more advice.

It might seem strange, but to many people this isn't a computer forum. Or, rather, it is a computer forum but not only a computer forum. This is the general discussion section, which is explicitly labelled as being for anything not covered by the other sections. It's probably the biggest section in terms of activity. OcUK forums aren't even only for tech stuff.

Asks Electrician: Can my Ring doorbell be wired into the mains?
Electrician: Yes, that can be done.

Assumes from this that that means you can directly wire it into 240v.
