Have Nvidia engineered this?

Don't jump all over me but I have noticed there are no 2080 super cards available on OC

Whilst it would be a very very bad move to even consider buying one atm, it does mean there are no (what was) high-end cards available. Yes the 2070 super is still in stock but for anybody out there wanting/needing a higher-end card, the 2080ti is the only option, which would be nuts to even consider.

So my question really. Did Nvidia engineer the launch to push either people to preorder the new cards by making the stock unavailable or was it just the world has gone mad for the 2080 cards prior to the launch? I ask because when the 10 series cards launched I picked up my old venerable 980ti for £310 in the end of line fire sales that Gibbo did... (it's going to be replaced with a 3070 (if I can get one before 2021 LOL) as it is 5 years old next year and my Zotec warranty is up)

As I say, just interested as I genuinely can't see them being available before chrimbo.

Yes I will be interested in what AMD will be bringing out as if the rumour that the 3060ti will be the vanilla card is true (source) then it might be a budget fight???

Yes. It's entirely to do with all that and nothing at all to do with the minor global pandemic fracas cocking up supply chains ;)

To be honest a lot of places do have a lot of 2080 and super in stock but the way I see it is a good having no stock of the older cards that’s been replaced is a good buy8ng department and done they job.

I bet places like overclockers stop buying new stock months ago and just run out and order when they had one it’s what I would do with my company.

Yeah that's not Nvidia, that's OcUK as a sensible purchasing decision. As mentioned, why would a retailer keep buying stock for a known discontinued product line? When at that price point is hugely beaten by next-gen stock that was upcoming?

Of course it makes sense as a purchase manager to let that stock trickle off... No logic in buying more stock that no one is going to want to buy.

But obviously Nvidia also plays a part, in lowering/stopping production on 20 series on some models. Again all completely normal for any tech/manufacturing company lol.

They've pulled everything above the 2060 except the Titan from the nVidia store as well. Makes sense though especially with this coronavirus situation.

MooresLawIsDead predicted all of this before the launch, artificially low supply and low price of FE cards so people got gouged by AIB's and Nvidia could pretend they were innocent, I suspect they planned this due to the low Samsung 8nm yields.

I don't know what the arrangement is, but certainly some sellers are still selling the 2080S. I guess that there are some people still buying them too. Those who haven't heard about the 3080, those who are scared off by reports of bugs.... What really amazes me though is the way that some sellers are so amazingly slow advertising the new 3080 cards. Seems to me they are missing the hype boat.

I get all the points posted however there are those who need a build (I spec'd a build 3 weeks ago as they needed it for the start of Uni) there was no way my friend could wait and so I got him a 2060S, I guess these are the people who would be the market for any 20 series cards, bearing in mind the members in this forum are much more informed than those in the wider world.
However, having a deep dive there are a lot of 2080's out there still. Just not at OCUK

Thanks for all the replies.

Maybe they don't want to deal with the absolute mess of it all right now, or literally cannot get any stock secured so it's a pointless endeavour.

NVIDIA has lost a lot of creditabillity with this launch.
Many of us are just really frustrated at how it's all gone down.

I really do hope AMD release a killer GPU range, as honestly NVIDIA could do with a good kicking.

They wont, Thats why Nvidia did it they would have discussed this over dinner ceo to ceo and made sure the status quo stays like it is. Nvidia are happy, AMD are happy everyone wins but the consumer.

People have short memories - same kind of thing happened with the last 2 nVidia launches it is just amplified this time by higher demand (especially a lot more demand for the approx. £700 price point) and the coronavirus situation.

This talk about poor Samsung 8nm yields is BS mostly made up by people with an agenda - pretty much no one actually knows outside of the companies involved. I've heard defect density is 0.14cm/2 versus 0.09cm/2 on TSMC 7nm which would put GA102 yields somewhere around 70% which is pretty average for this point in time.

All AMD has to do with the 6900XT is get close (spec sheet suggests it may actually beat it) to the 3080 but actually be available, if my TUF OC preorder is still waiting around then I'll be very tempted to swap over, being on a old spare gpu for xmas isn't my cup of tea.

I'd say yes and no, AMD's Lisa Su, Or 1 of the other big boffins at AMD said that RDNA will do for GPU's what Zen did for CPU's, With that in mind, And with a few people at Nvidia likely having seen actual RDNA2 performance through various means, Nvidia will have wanted to grab market/mind share before AMD come out with their new RDNA2 cards i.e they rushed them out, This is made more evident with the capacitor issue that has been in the spotlight recently on the 3080's, It's an exaggerated issue but it is a symptom of a rushed product launch.

This. If they release hopper with a very good price for performance improvement, people will quickly forget all this and order. Nvidia always get a free pass for this kind of stuff anyway. It is AMD that has to be careful as people never forget their blunders.
