might sound a retarded question but i Got my v5 through today for my St220 and it now has 3 former keepers for the car when there was only 2 so how has that happened?
its 10 yrs old and was registered to the Ford dealership for the first 8 months and then the 2nd owner had it for the 9yrs and 4 months after that which the garage i purchased from showed me on the v5 they had. They never registered it so i am only the 3rd owner but should that be on the v5 as 3 former keepers when i am not a former keeper yet?
Its something i have never noticed before with always buying private but me being the 3rd owner should not be down as 3 former keepers should it?

former means old, had 2 before you bought it then the addition of the old owner makes it 3 when you sell it will be 4 :)

you can pay a small fee for a list of the old owners

so because i am the 3rd owner its already down as 3 former keepers even though i am the current keeper? lol. its something i have never looked at properly but it just confused me as it says former keepers rather than registered keepers.

Well my new V5C arrived today and it says 1 former keeper as I'd expect it to. If you know for a fact there were only 2 then you should not be included in that as indeed, you're the current keeper not a former.

do a hpi check, and call dvla to check the keepers.

yeh thats what i have never looked into before and with it saying former keepers i was thinking i should not be down as former when i am the current owner.

thats what i dont understand it was registered to the Ford dealers from new then to the last owner of 9 years. He traded it in and it was not registered by the garage at all and they showed me the v5 they had with the owner of 9yrs as a previous owner and 2 former keepers with him on it so i then sent the v5 off as the new owner and it comes back still with him as the previous owner of 9yrs but now with 3 former keepers

possibly:

when the previous owner (3rd owner) traded in the car he gave the v5 showing 2 previous owners to the garage. I think only a small yellow section of the v5 is required to be sent off by the trader to the dvla so he retains the v5 and show it to you,

you complete the form and now you are showing as the 4th owner. it gets confusing as some adverts say "x previous owners on log book" when there is typically one more.

If the garage processed the documents correctly they will not show as a former keeper.

Sounds like you need to contact the DVLA.

From the bit in red it seems you say it showed two former with the last owner as the owner on the v5. This would suggest they were the 3rd not 2nd owners.

I think making the assumption that you are the 3rd owner from seeing a v5 with 2 previous owners is wrong

the v5 that you saw with two previous owners was probably the 3rd owners v5 and had the name and address of that owner on the front.

The garage just hold the v5 until they sell the car

sorry should have worded that better. the v5 that the dealer had showed the same 2nd owner of the last 9 years with the same address as what is on my v5 now. So from the v5 i got with the car and sent off to the one i have just received today its got the same former owner same address for the last 9 years but instead of 2 owners it says 3 which is why i thinks its a mistake on the dvla's part.
When he traded the car in and sent the part of the v5 off for no longer owning it he then becomes a former owner so even though he was the 2nd owner he was down as previous when i purchased it as it was registered to nobody. Its then come back today with him still as the previous owner since 2005 after Ford but now with 3 owners

If the V5 you saw at the dealer said 'Former Owners: 2' then the car had 3 owners and now you are the 4th owner. It's really that simple.

The V5 you saw was the one the previous owner had - ie, with him and 2 previous owners.

2+1 = 3

2+2= 4

You are the 4th owner of you car and there is nothing wrong with the DVLA's processing of the request.

1.Ford garage registered it late 2004 when new
2.guy from Wolverhampton then buys it start of 2005 and owns it for 9 years then trades it in at a Ford dealership who dont want it and pass it on to the dealer i purchased from none of them register it. So were is the 3rd owner from?
what happens with the v5 when the previous owner has sent the slip off to the DVLA saying he no longer owns the car after trading it in??
He becomes a former owner which makes it 2 former owners and now its come back to me today with the same guy of 9 yrs still down as last owner but now with 3:D

If anyone on here has purchased a new car does there V5 come with a previous owner on it like the dealership even though it brand new ?? maybe that will help with an explanation lol

also hpi check said 2previous owners last week after i seen the same former owner on the v5 now my v5 says 3 ??

A newly registered car will not have any former keepers so that will say 0.

Last week's HPI check would have said 2 previous owners plus the current so that would make sense for 3 owners. Now it has changed and is in your name it has been listed as having 3 previous owners and now you.

You're missing some history there as dealers shouldn't show up as an owner at all. If you're concerned you need to contact the DVLA to get the owner history - that'll clear it all up.

when someone trades a car in and sends the part of the v5 off to tell the DVLA they no longer own the car what happens if that car is sat not registered at a car dealership for like a month? Do they apply to the DVLA for an up to date V5 showing the guy who traded it in as a previous owner or do they keep the V5 from the guy that traded it in like he is still the owner??
thats why i am unsure as i normally buy cars private and u see the person u purchased from come up as previous owner when the new v5 comes through but dont know how it works when someone has traded it in but its sat at a car dealer's for a while

Perhaps the history you have is not correct?

How many previous owners were listed on the V5 when you viewed it prior to purchase?

Do you mind posting the reg? (Don't worry if you don't). Some people here have access to HPI databases and could confirm whether the V5 is showing whats on the main database.

2 previous owners when viewing it. with the same name and address that now says 3 former owners

If anyone can hpi check again on here with the reg that would be great i would message it to them on here

This is consistent then - when you viewed it, it had 3 owners - the person who last had it and 2 previous. Now it has 4 - you, the person who last had it and 2 previous.

Click 'Trust' on my post and my email is in there. I'll check it. I suspect it will say 4 for previous keepers though given on what you've said!
