Have the nvidia gfx issues on the xps m1330 been sorted?

My friend has asked me to recommend him a good value portable laptop, but I don't want to recommend this if he has to send it back every five minutes to have the mobo replaced.

Also hes going to be using it in lectures/library etc so needs to be silent most of the time and I have seen reports of poor cooling, does the fan stay off while doing low cpu tasks like browsing etc?

Thanks.

as long as its not a 8400 series nvidia part you should be fine. All the machines that I saw with gpu failures were sonys, dells or hp's with this part.

It is, the as the xps studio is too expensive.

So even though these are known to be faulty their still selling them in new laptops?

crazy stuff... I wouldnt touch another 8400m with a stick, I have a £1500 1080p sony that is now a paper weight due to this and sonys point blank refusal to replace the board.

From what I heard, the problem is easily fixed by flashing a new BIOS to the machine that increases the fan speeds, therefore cooling the GPU more effectively.

I expect it still remains quite quiet - there's obviously no need for the GPU to get warm in normal Windows usage.

Thats not good, integrated gfx is a no go so is fan noise (which I do see people complaining about with newer bioses). Will have to cross that one off the list.

I would say you a probably right here, for the sony it's to late though. I currently have an 9600m gt ddr3 in the sonys replacement and it is like a furnace out of the side under load. But so far none of the problems that the 8 series chip had.
