Have vs. of

Could Have - Verbs

Of - Preposition (informs you about the position e.g. Colour of.....

You can't put a preposition with a verb, only with a noun

Although "could have" sounds correct and is widely used, it's because "could've" which is actually the shortened version "could have" sounds like "could have"

Well thats what one of my mates says anyway

I dunno, Gov’nor – should have, could have – could have, should have – maybe it's more to do with linguistics and phonetics, know what I mean, nudge nudge?

I'm not arguing that it's wrong. I'm not even arguing that it's ok for people not the bother. What i'm saying is it seems odd that people bother correcting complete strangers on an internet forum on minor grammatical errors. There is a converstation going on and correcting grammar does not add to it - if anything it detracts from it as shown in the other thread.

It's not like you're going to save the English language by correcting a few mistakes on ocuk. It seems like a very odd thing to do.

It's like people who are so adamant we need to keep the pound. You really think in 500 years we're going to be using pounds? It really isn't that important.

Just because people make errors on ocuk does not mean they don't make errors elsewhere.

Having it brought to their attention will mean in future they're likely to be more careful, not just on the forums but in every day scenarios as well such as writing their CVs, sending emails to customers, writing formal documentation etc.

Yes all of the above have spell checkers built in to help but a spell checker isn't 100% accurate in correcting incorrect punctuation or grammar and I know many people who just don't take notice of the red or green squiggly lines in Word/outlook either and just smash the save/send button!

Basic things like of instead of have are things that even people whose first language isn't English get right. People who make such mistakes are just a bit bone idle really :p

Edit*
And proof reading helps lol.
