I always wondered what it meant to find yourself, apparently it means travelling somewhere distant during a gap year at university.

Has anyone found themselves and what did you discover?

Thanks.

Yep. I found myself a few years back, thought he was an absolute **** and have made every effort to kill him off.

Now I'm a lot less jealous, don't try to prove myself to people, accept myself as who I am and ultimately have found that I am liked by people more and women find me more attractive for it. 'Finding myself,' at least to me, was growing up.

lots of people beleive wisdom is a long way away, maybe the monks in tibet could gain wisdom by going to london or somesuch, or perhaps they've already found it and their wisdom told them they didnt need to go anywhere to find wisdom.

thats a bit of pratchett philosophy. travelling does broaden the mind, and in my opinion makes us better people, at least everyone i've met who's done so seem to be the better for it compared to those who havent.

as for finding yourself, how about looking down?

While travelling can help to broaden and/or open your mind I doubt many people have ever found themselves on gap year it doesn't really tend to happen when your that young if nothing else.

Finding yourself....:p there's nothing much there .

If you really want to find yourself, you have to understand the basic concepts of meditation, mindfulness and loving the present - not thinking or planning about the future - or thinking about things you did in the past. A very difficult feat in itself - that is rarely achieved in the teens / twenties ;)

If you can calm your thoughts enough - and filter out the 95% rubbish/useless thoughts most normal humans have every day - then you will really "find yourself" - and it doesn't require anything to do with gap years or travelling.

Try reading "The Power of now" if you want an insight in to the basics of it.
