Have you got piles?

I make crumble with my apples, never thought about cider, easy process?

Making cider is very easy. Juicing the apples is quite a hassle and really needs some kit to do effectively. Quite a lot of allotments have gear if they apple trees on the allotments and some near me give the apple juice away. If you have a tree you almost always end with more apples than you know what to do with, so you can easily get apples from lots of sources

I planted an apple tree last year. I got four apples from it this year.

I don't have piles... of apples unfortunately.

Maybe in 10 years time. :(

Can you use cooking apples to make cider?
We have a tree that every year we put hundred weight of apples into recycling bin as it produves too many apples for our needs and no-one around here or in work is interested

Yep. Our brew is actually quite heavy on the cooking apples. I think a lot of ciders are based on apples that aren’t necessarily the prettiest and good eating apples and are good robust varieties to get the volume of juice. You can make it with any old apples really, but obviously the flavour will be altered by the balance you use

the brewing gear is basically just a large tub and an air lock bubbler. we use a proper apple mashing machine, but if you can be bothered cutting by hand or making some sort of device to mash wouldn't be too complex. juicer its a heck of a lot easier to buy one which is going to set you back >100 quid depending on size, but I expect with some wood blocks, sturdy bucket and a car jack you could make something if you are so inclined.

As with lots of things the proper gear makes it easier, and miles easier to scale up quantity, but you can make small amount simply and cheaply as experiment I'm sure. we spend pretty much a day with 3 of us mashing and juicing to make 100 L with our kit

I have a masticating juicer...but the time it would take to juice the apples would be epic...weeks tbh...

If you think you've got apples in your orchard get them checked out.
The bass player in one of my bands thought he had piles but after waiting 2 years he has bowel cancer and on Oct 23rd he has a permanent stoma fitted.
<serious mode>

got 43 litres in different stages of brewing and already finished and consumed 8 litres. Not hard to make you just have to keep everything clean, plenty of instructions out there how to make it. It's a great way to use surplus apples rather than letting them rot on the ground and it's satisfying to consume booze you've made yourself
