Have you played Spore?

Yes and I wouldn't recommend it, the way it plays is like a series of mini games with no feeling of connection between them.

We were promised something special :(

Depends on the price. If it was on sale for a few quid, I might pick it up for a few hours entertainment. Its not going to be your game of the year though

ah ok, thought I'd best check. apparently it not possible to get a 2nd hand copy either :( and I'm not paying £9for ****.

Gutted really, I've always admired the concept of it.
Are there any games similar?

For a few quid it's certainly some good fun. Agreed it wasn't as great as it was hyped up to be, but I still enjoyed it and played it back through a few times as I enjoyed it :)

If you look at it like its a interactive toy thing, not a game with connecting stages, story, or plot...

then you might enjoy it, in the same way you might enjoy staring into a fishtank.

its a simulation of nature and its about nurturing the creature you make and seeing it evolve.

its not one of those things that "everyone should try at one point", as it simply isnt that good. But some might get a decent kick out of it.

does that sound interesting?

its does, I like the idea of making your own creature.

I used to love Jade cocoon 2 on the PS2, and really wish there was that kind of thing for PC. Same sort of thing but a bit more interactive and fairly similar to Pokemon.

Spore is this:

Minigame 1: Flash game.
This plays like a flash game essentially and you go around looking for "parts" to build your creature and making it bigger. The creature building is pretty boring on the whole; the creatures always look the same.

Minigame 2: World of Warcraft
This bit is literally like World of Warcraft. It's a hotkey MMO but with out the M, other M or the O. You continue building your creature and observe how the "best" creature is the four legged mega creature everyone else has.

Minigame 3: Warcraft 3
This plays a lot like WC3 but with a lot less units. Also note you can no longer advance your creature now, 2ish hours into the game.

Minigame 4: Widescale RTS Civilisation thing
This is the only vaguely creative minigame. It's basically an RTS version of Civilisation. Either lasts a frustrating 8 hours if your playing a "peaceful" creature or about 30 seconds if your a militaristic one.

Minigame 5: Space Stage
It's now come round to the last and longest stage which is a pointless mega minigame in which you fly around space messing around with planets in your spaceship. The most fun you'll have in Spore but their literally is nothing to do other than wage war with other species and recolor planets with your planet recoloring tool.

@Eames: It really is the most annoying part of the game, if I'm totally honest. Not only is minigame 3 boring as sin but the fact you can no longer advance your creature is incredibly frustrating.

The creature creator was the only good part of the game up to that point and they ripped it out only a few hours in.

I wish we'd gotten what we were originally promised with Spore. When playing it, you can always see the wasted technology running underneath.

@Pottsey: It really wasn't fun if you were playing peaceful. It's hard being 'diplomatic' when everyone else on the map sends 50 tanks to shoot at you.

I enjoyed the first minigame and completely lost interest by the end of the second one. The game had potential but was disappointing.

Wait for the Steam Summer sale. You might be able to get it plus the expansions for peanuts. It certainly isn't worth even the regular Steam price today.

Daichin really hit the nail on the head, it's 5 mini games only connected aesthetically by your monstrosity and after tribal even that means very little. Each one paling in comparison to dedicated games of the genre.

Yes, I regret every moment of it, and every penny I spent on it on release day :(

Most over hyped pile of nonsense ever released.
