Having a sheep as a domestic animal.

My mate's Nan used to have a goat. Just wandered about in the garden all day. Keeping the grass nice and short.

Then she ate it.

Sheep are actually far more intelligent than most people realise. Google, "sheep intelligent" and you'll see what I mean. Perhaps thinking of them as stupid makes them far easier to farm as food.

I've never encountered a sheep that was even remotely inteligent in my life.

They wander all over the place back home in Shetland and even though they must all have seen thousands of cars go past and should know they can't outrun them they still try to run away from them.

I Googled "intelligent sheep and all I could find that even hinted at intelligence was that they can remember each other's faces and some have managed to roll over a cattle grid. I don't think we're likely to see any Ovine rocket scientists in the near future :p

if you get a farm animal as a pet the chances are it is a breed that will put on weight quickly and not be expected to live past 4 or 5 years,so don't get too atached to it

Quite the opposite actually. Lambs take an age to fatten up and sheep will live for 10 years easily.

I doubt they could be trained, sheep are particularly stupid, even more so than cows.

I keep both, and its a very close contest tbh.A stupid cow is a much more daunting prospect than a stupid sheep tho,so i reckon that gives them the edge :) I used to rate sheep a lot more stupid until i actually kept some myself

My dads next door neighbour (by next door I mean half a mile up the road, but it's the closest house) has a pet sheep, a pig and a shetland pony. He lets them run around the house and the fields and from what I've seen they seem pretty well trained. They stink a bit, as does the house, but you have to admire the guy. What worries me though, is that he's in his late 50's and has never been married.

He lets his shetland pony run around the house too. Before I knew about him, I went up to bring a letter which the postman had delivered to my dads house. When the guy answered the door, I was quite surprised when a pony squeezed past him and ran out of the house.

So I suppose they can be trained as pets but you wouldn't want them running round your house.

Sheeps = EL Stupido. :D
And putting a no sex sheep jokes comment in is bang out of order i must say.

Anyways i was around a fair few sheep for a few months years ago when i was young. They are stupid, not just a little stupid either they are more stupid than Baldrick off Black adder. I really couldn't see one being trained to any standard at all. I am bound to be wrong but in my experience i wouldn't even try. Pigs on the other hand get domesticated real quick. Hang around with one for a week or so and it act's like a dog. :D
Pigs are great sheep are thick and crap.
Thinking about it i remember the little piglets and them all being well friendly and seemingly intelligent.

Of course this may be a reflection on how thick i am if i think pigs are intelligent. :o

Get one and find out, how many of us do you think have experience of pet sheep?

I heard there very affectionate animals

Wonder if there are Welshmen on this board?

My aunt and uncle had a pet lamb that lived in their house and was house trained, but they are clearly mad.
I Would never want any of our sheep any where near my house, don't even want them in our fields for that matter. Joy is the job we have to do next week of castrating the little bleeters, now that really does make your eyes water ! !

Aw you have to wait until next week? I'm going castrating some in about 10 minutes :D

We had 2 lambs that used to escape from the fields all the time. Fair play to them. So we let them wander around the farm freely. They wandered up the road too but always came back and slept on a patch of grass near the sheds. People loved them. Funny little things really.

Still, their time came and, for the record, they tasted magnificent ;)
