Having issues changing oil

quick check... you are also draining the oil using the sump nut before trying to remove the filter?

Will be phoning VW for a new drain plug. If it's too expensive, I'll just man up and get covered in hot oil once a year :p

Yeah draining with the sump nut first :)

So, on that engine, the sump plug is in the filter? Or is that just another drain point to help when you change the filter?

Either way, the new filter isn't likely to come with one in it. However I'm sure you can get an alternative filter without the hole in it.

The sump plug is in the sump, there is also a drain in the oil filter cap because as you can see, it will hold oil even when the engine has been drained...
:)

The visible bit in the photos isn't the filter, it's the filter housing - which has the secondary oil drain plug in it.

I'm actually wondering what my prospects are of getting that drain plug out of the filter cap - whether I'd be better off getting a new one of those as well..

Don't worry about that drain plug, once the filter housing comes past the o ring then the oil will start to trickle out anyway, leave it run out, go and get a brew...
:)

This is true - is it really that much of a PITA that it's worth even replacing that plug? But then I think that they bothered to engineer it in in the first place!
