Having no speed limit is safer

In some peoples eyes, limits are there for breaking already.
No limit? no chance over here. Thankfully, for us road users! :)

i wouldnt be for an overall unlimiting of the roads as said above added to that the general way drivers over here think and behave would just be a disaster, can you just imagine beating along a B-road and having some nutter flying round at 120mph.

but i reckon it would work if it was implemented to certain roads, the M6 toll for example,i think it could be safely implemented there, i would gladly pay for the privilage of driving on an unrestricted road, especially if it was smooth and well mantained.

but before anything like that happened i reckon we would need to really change our approach to driving.

Giving drivers responsibility nearly always results in safer roads... It's just a shame our government (and idiot people who buy into their lies) are determined to do the opposite, which is proven to have a detrimental effect on road safety.

You talk as if you have experienced it. When in the UK have you seen the roads get safer as people get more responsiblity?

I honestly don't think giving more responsibility to drivers on our roads, in the form of having higher or no speed limits, is really a clever idea. The general populace of GB are probably not intelligent, mature and responsible enough to deal with it.

We've seen the rate of improvement decrease dramatically as more and more responsibility has been taken away from the driver....

Then let dangerous or careless driving laws deal with that, rather than unnecessary restrictions on those who are ok.

So you would be happy to increase road deaths as long as those doing the killing were locked up?

Jokester

I'd like to see a decrease in road deaths by improving driving standards (ie tackling the problems that actually cause road deaths in the first place) rather than ignoring them in favour of raising money and creating a false bad guy (as the speed kills campaign has done).

There has to be a compromise between efficiency and acceptable deaths otherwise the speed limit on every road in the UK would be 5mph.

Sometimes we need to accept that life is dangerous. Doubly so if you chose to move yourself around in a metal box.

...time as gone on. Is basically what you are saying, yes?

No, there is a marked change in the trend at the time the speed kills policy and speed cameras policy were introduced in 1993, that hasn't been mirrored by other European countries who actually carried on dealing with the causes of accidents. We have diverged from the trend due to poor road safety policy. I want the trend to be back to the 4% drop it should be per year, rather than the 1% drop it is now. For that, we need to tackle the causes of accidents, and speed isn't anything approaching a major one. We need to return to the discretionary enforcement of speeding which was far more about bad driving (or simply start prosecuting people for bad driving) that we had before the camera was introduced, the policy that actually worked.

Didn't the number of road deaths plummet though when the speed limit on motorways was introduced?

The only way to only have safe drivers on the road is to restrict driving from large numbers of unsuitable people. It's not going to happen so I'm happen to be restricted, if it as a result it keeps people safer.
