Having too much 'stuff'

I'm in the same boat. I had a massive clear out when I moved out of my old flat and put everything in storage but I still have boxes full of network cables, HDMI and optical cables and a box full of old RAM and hard disks that I just can't seem to part with.

Maybe when I move again in a few months I'll be a bit more brutal.

I had stuff in a storage container until I realised it would be cheaper for me to buy the stuff over again when/if I needed it.

I tend to keep stuff from hobbies that I'm not longer active in.

Like a motorcycle, shotguns, and a pile of airsoft kit. As it's out of site, it's out of mind.

Most of the time.

I am pretty militant about eBaying stuff that is worth anything that I don't need, or just charity shop / chucking stuff out that doesn't get used. I also try not to buy absolute tat in the first place.

i have a garage full of stuff. Which i need to empty. but every time i look at it i go.. oh i may want to use that lool

Same, you always come up with excuses as to why you should keep it. I like to tinker with things so nearly anything could have a possible use but it rarely does.

Its a good feeling to have, it helps stop you trading your cash (Mostly earned by long hours working) for stuff which often does not make you happy.

A few years ago I took a conscious decision to stop aspiring to have "nice things". It really has been life changing for the better. There is still the occasional relapse.

Once you get out of the grip of extreme consumerism or whatever you want to call it, it's so much easier to be happy. That desire to have the latest things and more internet points than the other contributors to the likes of the "post images of things you have purchased" thread can really drag you down. I'm sure some people manage it just fine though.

It's unhealthy for sure but that's the way the world is these days.

Talking about stuff I'm going to finally plug up the courage to sell two items I don't even use anymore.

Problem is I'll make a few hundred which i won't use straight away but it'll be there waiting to be spent :p maybe towards Christmas presents? Don't worry i keep it simple anyway

I take a view of buying nice things that I actually want to use, not nice things that I don't. If I think I will use something enough, then I will buy it.

To this end I have been buying some new furniture to put around the house for example, which I fully intend to have in place for years.

I bought a 5.1 sound system for my TV, use it all the time. I bought a 1080 GPU for my PC, again use it all the time. If I can't see myself using something, and truly making it worth buying, I won't buy it! :)

^ That sounds like me, although I do get carried away sometimes so there's periods where I don't buy much, but then boom there's a splurge once I buy something.

Laptops are another one. I have three. A rMBP, a Macbook, and my old Macbook. Seriously, managing them and my daughter's stuff - and my iMac with it's virtual Windows kit on - it's taking a ton of time :o

Tbh, laptops aren't too bad because having 3 of them still don't take up much space. My main laptop has an i7-4720HQ (passmark=8082) and my spare has an i5-3360M (passmark=4372). Basically I want 2 machines to have a passmark of over 4000 for responsive web 2.0 browsing, and I'll still have a >4000 laptop if one of them fails. Then my 3rd laptop has a T3400 (passmark=1126) so no good for web 2.0 / HTML5, but it's fine for DJ-ing and LJ-ing and it's not the end of the world if that gets nicked while it's left in the DJ booth etc.

But does anyone else feel like they simply just have too much stuff?
everyone else seems to puts it

"I have to much rubbish" :D

I keep going through a stage where I say I go through it and throw a carrier bag of it away every week in the dustbin..
"But I normally just giveup or forget after a few weeks :o"

that I'll likely never use and heck even if I did need one I could probably pop to a high street store and pick one up.
I have boxes and boxes everywhere of all different cables and other rubbish I collected over many years

Photo of just one the 4 draws under my bed :o:o:o

Haha, mine's not just full of useless crap I won't ever use again... It also has a couple of decent TVs, hi-fi gear, computers, furniture... All stuff that will be used on a daily basis once I move.

But still, I pay £50 a month for the privilege in a 20sq ft unit. Bit cramped now!

Sigh.

Why have 3 laptops? I just don't get it....?

I built my Nephew a Gaming PC from used parts for christmas last year...He's was thrilled with it but he's now seen and heard my gaming PC and wants to upgrade his GFX card his Sound Card and his monitor.

I said get all you stuff together and take it to CEX. Get rid of all of your gaming consoles and games and WII, and Xbox and do the easyrider shuffle.

I yet to find out if he is going to get rid of old tech to keep his current PC current.

I'm quite good at getting rid of things...And keeping things simple.

I buy to many guitars and have just sold three as I was feeling guilty about having so many when most of the time I just go to my old favourite.

I thought whats the point and sold them all.

The best feeling in the world is getting rid and having a clear out. Simplifying your surroundings.

I don't really get attached to material things from a sentimental POV.

BIN.

I had a plastic container in te garage like this...

I binned it and never missed it...

Scart Leads are dead my friend...I see one in that mess...Get rid!

Yup.

If your latest PC build has been running as you wanted for 3 months since you built it, junk that mess as you don't need it.

I used to buy too much in way of upgrading my electronics all the time to the next best thing.

I like to keep stuff as long as possible now to get my monies worth, and in small part its better for the environment, when I do finally get rid of something I like to give it to a charity shop.
