Evening all, i seek some advice :)

Last week i put together a new system which consists of:

Asus p5n32 SLI Premium Mobo (latest bios)
2gb OCZ Vista Upgrade memory (comes as x2 1gb) (800mhz)
7800 GTX
Pentium D 3.2 (all i know about the chip)

Now for a week its been working solid, been prime stable has run every test i put on it fine, Yesterday i picked up a e6600 chip as soon as i fitted into the system and loaded my OS (Windows MCE) it locked up, only on 1 occasion did it actually boot into windows, i figured it was because i hadnt set the timmings and voltage for the memory, i set these correctly and still it wouldnt load.

After reading up on the asus website it says for memory support 800mhz (OC) 667 and 533, now this has thrown me a bit, does it properly support 800 out of the box ? is it being overclocked when running at 800 ? i set the memory to 533 so it runs in sync and it booted into windows fine and has taken a reinstall, however when i run prime it will stop and say its detected an error, sometimes i can boot to OS and it will run through prime ok other times it will error straight away, after placing a stick of 512 533 memory its stable, never failed prime or anything,

Ive ran memtest on it and it has been fine, i dont think any of the components are faulty

My bios keeps wanting to run my memory at 800 and when it does my system does not boot into windows, given i got the parts from work should i take the motherboard back and replace it with a newer one (which does properly support the memory) or get my memory exchanged for 667 so it cant keep trying to run at 800 ? when ive run the memory at 667 my benchmarks have been slower which i expected

Im not sure what to do, change my motherboard or swap the memory, if i swapped boards i would go for the XFX 680i or should i do a straight swap for any of the 667 memory we do (we dont stock 533)

Help :)

Thanks

sounds more like a problem with the cpu (bios settings?) as the ram was running fine with the pentium D in it (or have I misunderstood somewhere?). Was the memory running at 800mhz when the pentium was in the system?

Oh yeah thats a good point, the memory was running at 800mhz when i had the pentium d in as that was a 800fsb chip, the settings for the chip seem to be fine, the fsb is 1066 which is correct, it just doesnt like running at 800mhz with this chip.

I remember on a few builds ive done in the past ive not been able to do an install until the fsb and memory speed where in sync, doesnt seem to be the case now seems i can use a 1066 fsb chip and 667 memory for example.

Thats really confused me now as i was sure it was an issue with the board not liking 800mhz memory

might be worth setting fsb as 800 manually in bios, set the cpu:mem divider to 1:1, set the cpu multi to 9 (this is quite an underclock with that multi and fsb, but its the stock multi for an e6600), set the voltages to auto (try manually if it still doesnt work), and manually set the pci-e bus to 100 (I think this is default, may wanna check this). Hope it works homz

[edit] if it is stable, change the cpu to 9 with 1066 fsb (9x266 = 2.4 ghz) and try it again (this is stock i believe for an e6600)

[edit] oh yeah, remeber to change the cpu:mem divider to 5:4 I believe to get 800mhz ram on a 1066mhz fsb

[edit] oops, that should be a divider of 4:3 :)

I dont think it has any dividers it says something along the lines of memory tweaker, fsb tweaker and then u can set it to what you want, ill have a look now though and see if i can see anything obvious,

ive set it manually to 800mhz memory and 1066 fsb on the chip, accoding to AI booster which comes with the board it does say 9x266 which as u said is 2400mhz, ill try to get it to boot with 800 now so i may be a while :)

Thanks for you comments dave

Right it has booted although straight away its failed prime,

If i put my 533 memory in, it never fails

id show you some screen shots of the bios/ AI booster util although i cant upload images :(

what is cpu voltage have you set in the bios homz? Also, try just one stick of ram in the machine and see if you have any luck, I dont know much about vista but ive heard of different patches being installed because of memory issues (I may be way off here though).

its default which is 1.24, ive just had a scout about google and theres a few people having the same problem with prime, most of which said it was because of memory timmings, not enough voltage or too high an fsb :( its frustrating that i cant get it stable at stock never mind overclocked.

Ive tried it with one stick of mem and it does the same, ive individualy mem tested both sticks and they are fine also

Dont know if these are of any use but the memory is 1.8 (which is right according to the OCZ website) PCIEX 3.3v,

I installed Vista on this machine yesterday although i dont have a product key so i wouldnt be able to use it long term and i found it a lot slower than my mce install, i ran 3dmark 2001 ( i know its old but i have a good understanding of how the scores work) now on MCE i scored 39k , the same run using a vista machine gave me 22k, same settings ? so i dont know whats going on there but i do prefer MCE, i have a legit version of vista running on another system so didnt want to have vista on this one as well, wanted to have the best of both worlds if you will.

God this is frustrating

I had a problem like that , somewhere on the OCZ website it tells you to manualy set the NB to 1.4v and the memory voltage to 2.1v, i did that and it sorted my problem.

Thats intresting,

Ive just been running prime again, failed straight away with the ocz memory, put the 533 stick in and its been running for nearly half hr now without a problem,

Im really tempted to get the memory swapped on tuesday :(

The OCZ website says to run the memory at 1.8, ill try it though

Right, set the nb to 1.4 and the mem to 2.1 and its been running through prime for a while now (first time ever) its ran through 3dmark numerous times and has ran through the nvidia stability test which it has never done either,

Ill continue to test it overnight and see if it continues to work, looking good so far though id have never of tried that.

System at the min is running the mem at 800mhz, do you have a link to where it says on the ocz website ? id like to read that

Thanks both for your help, much appreciated.
