Haze is 576P?!

Unbelievable. It's the same vertical resolution as standard definition. Developers are gradually placing less and less focus on high definition. I used to say 'imagine what games would be like if the current consoles weren't HD and focused at 704x576 or 640x480' well this belief is getting eroded as the reality of real HD games are slowly trickling away and proving to be an illusion.

The only good news to come of this would be the very public outroar and highly negative publicity whenever a game is confirmed to be sub-HD. The backlash and reaction from gaming communities are often highly negative, and it should spur developers to think otherwise and put a little bit more effort in. Free Radical will forever be known as the lame duck developer that simply couldn't get such a generic and lifeless looking game to even run in 720p.

Haze doesn't even have anything in its graphics to warrant what is actually closer to standard definition than high definition. Absolutely nothing at all. What an embarassment and a farce of the highest magnitude.

Compared to Killzone 2 which is full HD with quincux AA, Haze and Free Radical deserve to limp away in unabated shame, tail firmly between its legs and think for a very, very long time why it failed.

I shall quote the creative lead, Derek Littlewood:

We prioritise a nice smooth framerate over a different res. Personally, I don’t really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty, they did the same with Halo, and they say with those games ‘It’s not running at true HD!’ And it’s like, I don’t care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me.

Yes. Well, as you develop an engine you’re aiming for a certain thing, but as all the pieces slot into place, you end up realising what sort of resolution you can run it at and that’s where we ended up with for Haze.

If you were to move forward with our next games, then as we optimise the engine we might be going, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll step things up and change things.’ But then different games we work on might have different requirements, so things may change there again. It’s all about how you use the resources you’ve got. But I don’t understand why people care whether there’s 20 pixels, 50 pixels, or 100 pixels more…

I think he sums it up quite nicely.

So GTA4 and CoD4 are a disappointment then?

Venturing slightly off-topic, but I own both a 360 and a PS3 and I've never even seen the PS3 GTA4 so I can't comment. As for CoD4, it's not my thing so I can't make much of a comment. I'm sure PS3 GTA4 looks great though and I know CoD4 does on both systems from the brief glimpses I have caught.

I'm just saying 720p is what I'd expect - doesn't necessarily mean I care whether 720p is what I get or not though, just as long as it looks good.

How's that working out for you?

Just fine, seeing as all the games I actually play are 720p. However as I said above, I don't really care whether it's lower or not, I just want games that play and look good on all systems, as I'm sure all of us do.

To be fair to them we've seen one level, so its a little unfair to say that it has nothing at all in its graphics department which warrant dropping the resolution. In the case of FPS's consistent frame rate is more important than the resolution, in my opinion.

And with Killzone 2... since everyone these days seems to claim their games are running at certain settings until their practically out the door I wouldn't be surprised if we later find out its not really true HD once people actually get their hands on the game.

Well the demo stank my house out and completely dissapointed me as I really enjoy FD's games in the past, but I will wait for the reviews to decide whether it's worth a purchase or not as I do like the sound of 4 player co-op and it does run very smooth.

Not bothered about the resolution, but am a bit hacked of with the 4GB install unless it has no loading screens i.e. like Uncharted?..

I don't care about the resolution, I just don't understand why it's so low, I mean it doesn't even look that good to begin with so they shouldn't even require a lower resolution to keep the frames up.

Just look at Gears of War and Uncharted, they run and look great at 720P.

Wonder if Gears of War 2 runs at 720P. ;)

It's already been verified by Quasz51 (the guy who does the pixel counting and resolution checks) that Killzone 2 is 1280x720 with 2xQMSAA. Not to mention there are plenty of games that make Haze look tame by comparision - just look at Unreal Tournament 3 for instance, which isn't even a single-platform release like Haze is. It runs at 720p just fine and looks far far more graphically accomplished. Like it or not, Haze is a technical stinker.

I doubt he has access to the game where he can play it on his own setup so I think its fair to assume that he's based any Killzone analysis on screenshots and videos they've released so far... which of course will be in whatever resolution they state the game is meant to be in and easily manipulated. My point was it's a little early to be quoting that game as benchmark for what titles should be aiming to achieve.

If you base the technicality of a game on what resolution it runs at then sure its a stinker, but for the sake of a few 100 pixels I'd take the constant frame rate over it any day, and it doens't look that bad. Yes in an ideal world we'd have both the 720p minimum resolution and atleast a constant 30fps but if the game ends up being good I think this will be relatively easy to overlook on this occassion, and I bet 90% of players won't even notice the lower resolution unless their told - where as if the framerate is all over the place they'll certainly notice the difference.

Apparently Famitsu gave Haze 34/40, as i expected so far reviews aren't reflecting the reception of the demo as that's a pretty respectable score.

what games would they be? you must not play many on your ps3 then lol. most of them are rendered in odd-ball sizes. As long as its done right, its generally fine.Haze did look a bit soft around the egdes though, regardless of how boring the demo was lol
