hello all

i have Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (WD3200BEVT installed on my laptop.

i want to install a faster HD and dont want to go through the whole installation process of S/W etc.

i was thinking of upgrading to a faster Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache.

is there a way i can just image my current HD to the newer one with out too much hassle so it will be a perfect clone?

Thanks

cheers for that.

i think thats SW side of things sorted, the HW side of it now, do i need a caddy or something for the new HD or put the new HD in the laptop and run the S/W to copy from old HD to new HD?

if that makes sense? :)

You're probably going to struggle doing it from a laptop, unless you've got an e-sata port on the laptop and some way of powering the drive.( or room for 2 drives in the laptop)
PC sata, data and power connections are identical to laptop sata. The easiest method assuming you have a pc with enough spare sata ports and power connectors would be to use that.

actully there is a esata present but no room for 2 drives i dont think, but no PC i,m afraid, knew should have done this when i installed win 7.

All you need then is an e-sata cable and a power source for the drive.
Get the drive attached externally, run the cloning software, then swap the newly cloned external drive for the internal, job done

But do check first to see if you can install 2 drives in the laptop,( probably not, but worth checking) as it'll save you messing about with an external power source and e-sata cable

thanks for that. it looks like i may have to opt for a caddy or something.

i dont think this laptop will have 2 drives its a medion p8610.

An e-sata caddy is one way to do it, and you can always put your old drive in there and use it for external storage when you're done.

good idea, but already have ext drive, but maybe sell it on afterwards, shmae only purchased for one use and all i had to do is buy the new drive and install everything from scratch which i have many times. live and learn :)

looks like have to consider a caddy as part of the cost and also look at decent simple one

thanks for all your help and time
