HD 1080p Files??

Hi just set up an old Pentium D with the following components,

Pentium D @ 3.2GHz
Nvidia 8600GT
2GB DDR2 Ram @ 800MHz

At the moment I have put XP just to test, but the main purpose was to run 1080p files, Youtube struggles so do .mkv files. 720p works fine.

Are the above components rubbish? I know there old school but they are not that rubbish surly?

I am using Internet Explorer 9 and have tried Mozilla Firefox. I persume IE9 uses HTML5? Firefox downloaded the Flash plugin. I have Java and Flash installed and Silverlight.

I have tried the .mkv files with a basic WMP a stripped down version and VLC still quite choppy.

My Motherboard can and should be able to OC the CPU. Maybe I can try this seeing as HD files tend to be CPU intensive?

Use Chrome, it supports the h.264 codec. It will play all the HD vids on Youtube with HTML5 intsead of flash.

As for the mkv files, I had 1080p files running near perfect on an atom netbook. I used Media Player Classic with LAV filter codec packs and it ran pretty smoothly.

With MPC-HC you shouldn't need any additional codecs as you need to use hardware acceleration to play the 1080p files. MPC-HC comes with drivers that enable video acceleration (you should see DXVA in the status bar). Can't remember what renderer you need to select to enable them if it doesn't work out of the box though.
