Chaps i just got hold of a 1gig version of said card very cheap.
Now i only game at 1280 * 1024 and wonder would this card be ok for general gaming.
I.E IL2 and empire at war series total war ect.
I have checked the old reviews out and it seems to look good.
But last time I though of a vid card my 8800gts 320 was the daddy.
DX11 not needed for me atm.

will be fine at that res me thinks, I use a 512mb one at 1680x1050 and all my games (cod mw, dragon age origins, even crysis was playable, not high settings obviously)

if it was very cheap then try it, if no good sell on and get something beefier

Yes very fine I run 1680 and run everything on highest settings just fine on any game but crysis.

im using a 1gig one @ 1920x1200 and it runs pretty much every thing at decent settings.

crysis warhead with no aa and second highest settings.

I must say chaps this is indeed a fine card.
Very impressed with image quality, seen some new effects with bridge commander i had not seen before.
Chuffed to bits my nice new pc is now nearly complete, just a ssd drive to go.
I tried Fear with it last night and was very pleased.
IL2 which i play a lot really flies along lol.

Up until Friday my 4850 512mb was handling everything a decent settings but I think the issues with heat on the first gen caught up with it and she died

Got a 5850 now :D

Not sure how different the 4850 and 4870 are, but for what it's worth, at that resolution my 4870 runs everything including crysis at very high (dx10) settings with 4xAA at acceptable framerates (50~).

Especially if you overclock it, it should work for pretty much every modern game you encounter.

The main differences between the 4850 and 4870 is the GDDR5 RAM of the 4870 vs the GDDR3 RAM of the 4850, there's a huge difference in speed.

I've been running an 8800 GTS 320MB since 2007 and it's starting to see it's age so i went and bought a Vapour-X 1GB 4870, i'm really itching to play Empire Total War and GTA IV maxed out :)

I think you made a good decision Timmy, i was waiting for the 4870s to come down before i went for an upgrade, what FPS do you get at Empire Total War with the 4850? Love that game :D
