ok, think of the gpu as a car almost, engine suspension etc.. the core of the gpu is going to be the engine obviously, and all the rest of the bits, well you get the point. At present, hd5870 is 850mhz core stock, while gf480 is 700mhz.
Think of the bugatti veyron on top gear, not nearly the fastest round the track but still claims the title of fastest production car in the world (it had). the gf would have all round better parts, but the hd would still have the engine and speed, so hd5870 = veyron, technically the fastest

It doesn't really... work like that. Also the shaders on GF100 run at 1.4GHz anyway.

Really the thread title should be 'HD5870 IS the fastest single GPU in the world (analogously)'.

i didnt mean it was fastest in games etc.. i tried to put it in a simple way. we measure our cpu 'speed' in mhz, well ghz now, so the same with the gpu. doesnt mean it will be fastest with things, just means that its gpu has the fastest speed.. which means??

ur obviously a noob.

Why cant you have a debate on forum without resorting to name calling....a lot of people in this forum need to learn how to interact on a forum!

Back on track, it doesnt even work like that in the car world, fasest at what? drag, drift, track it never that simple. My skyline could have out drag a veyron at the lights until he changed gear and stomped me into las week :p

yeah its all to do with architecture aswell, a P4 3.4Ghz wouldn't beat a core2duo at the same speed even if you turned one core off due to the way the architecture processes the data.

Here is brief description of what speed is all about:

Comparison of processors speeds requires thorough analysis, as the speed of a given CPU is dependent upon many factors, such as the type of instructions being executed, the execution order and the presence of branch instructions (problematic in CPU pipelines). CPU instruction rates are different from clock frequencies, usually reported in Hz, as each instruction may require several clock cycles to complete or may be capable of executing multiple independent instructions at once. Additionally, the number of cycles required for instructions to complete is dependent upon the instruction being executed. MIPS are difficult to compare between CPU architectures. This and other limitations of the unit lead many computer engineers to define MIPS as Meaningless Indicator of Processor Speed.

Core speed is only relevant to how much performance it gives per megahertz.

Horse power isn't the be all and end all of speed, it's relevant to other aspects of a vehicle.

A vehicle A with 600 horse power isn't faster than vehicle B with 300 horse power if you're just looking at those numbers.

What if A weighs 10 tonnes and B weighs 1?

Basically, the frequency a core runs at is only relative to the core itself, you can't apply it to other cores because they work in different ways.

The reason the 5870 has the fastest GPU is because it has a higher overclocking head room than a GTX480.

Basically speaking, while you can overclock a GTX480, you won't be able to overclock it enough (using the same cooling methods) for it to match an overclocked 5870 in performance.

When looking at these things I think you have to take stock frequencies (ie what you are actually buying) as being the true value.

After all every single card OCs differently.

Would you call graphics card A faster than B when card A is 30% slower but one card hit the sweet spot and can 100% overclock?

if they can insult then i can too, you're all pricks! i told you I KNOW it doesnt mean its faster then the gt480.. i was talking about speed, and core hence the engine bit, not all the other things. all this was just a funny little thought that if someone blimming understood, you'd get it. you're children over-reacting a little i must say. where on earth did i mention drift etc.. i said round a track, = true performance, as not many roads are a few miles straight.. im not even going to bother, gee..

My GPU is at 1000Mhz :D Im the best :o

Read the GTX480 reviews, so much is now running on the shader clock or around it that really its more important than the core clock now.
