hd-dvd equiped 360

Microsft have repeatedly stated that they would never put a HD-DVD inside. Can't really see the point anyway, where would they price it? The Elite is already the same price as a PS3, plus, do we really need 4 SKU's? No.

As has already been said. Theres no way they can switch to games on a HD-DVD now because they would lose so many customers.

They'll have to wait till the Xbox 720 (or whatever they call the next one) comes out and make the switch over then.

There wouldn't be any point anyway, people keep harping on about how the PS3 can't use all that disc space for anything useful so the same can be applied here. I guess MS will wait to see who wins the battle out of Blu-Ray/HD-DVD and as you said, use the right hardware in their next console.

Please... do go on. Because I can't think of any instances.

"Oh hi, if you want DX10 you'll need to buy our new OS, Vista. Sorry to all you peons who bought XP, but we need to give people some reason to buy Vista otherwise no-one will."

XP is over 5 years old for crying out loud.
I doubt MS have not bothered with DirectX 10 support for XP just for the sake of it.
If so this will be the first time that a new version DirectX hasn't been compatible with a previous MS OS.

LOL. If something like that miffs you, it's a wonder you ever moved away from Windows 95!

There's a difference between upgrading an outdated OS and cutting off all 10m+ owners of Xbox360's by releasing games on HD-DVD.
With your mentality we'd still be on Windows95. XP needed upgrading to Vista and if DX10 is a part of that, then so be it.

With your mentality we'd all still be playing games on floppy disks ;)

Nothing wrong with XP. No-one actually wants Vista, and it's sales figures reflect this. Those sales figures would be even lower if it wasn't for DX10 artificially being Vista only.

Im pretty sure with the outcry of xp when it was released being bloated etc people wouldn't want have wanted it either and stuck with 2000. That didn't happen, same thing will happen with vista. Count on it.

Still amazes me with people forking out £400+ on graphics cards an OS that can be had for under £100 is some kind of big deal....

Win2k was not a home platform, it was an office workstation/server platform. A lot of the complaints about XP were that it was unsuitable for an office environment, which was true until SP2 came out. Vista has been a disaster for Microsoft, if the desktop OS market was actually competitive they'd be in serious trouble right now imo. Knowing MS though, they'll probably turn it around - about the time the second service pack is released.

Come one now, DX10 graphics cards are a lot less than £400. The point of this thread is that it's wrong for MS to force people to buy a HD-DVD drive by releasing games on HD-DVD discs. How is that different to forcing people to upgrade operating systems through artificial means like making DX10 Vista only?

Am I the only person who doesnt think vista is devils spawn of the highest order? There is no need to put a HD-DVD drive in the current xbox, there is no demand or a financial gain from dong so with the format war going on. You never know the next xbox may have to use bluray depending on the demand from consumers.

Of course you aren't, there are plenty of other Microsoft apologists here ;)

Microsoft are one of the companies backing HD-DVD, so they do stand to gain much financially by forcing everyone to buy HD-DVD drives/discs and by winning the format war.

but they won't do it with the 360 as it stand now, yeah they may make a built in unit on a TV with toshiba that plays HD-DVDs but the games willl still be on DVD on BOTH

For one right now its a rumour nothing has been confirmed,. Secondly MS will not force people to buy games on HD discs. IF the Hd xbox is true and games are on hd discs then they will more than likely have games on hd discs and multiple discs for regular dvd9. MS are not stupid enough to force people to upgrade to HD drives as it would cause a rucus. Most likely a firmware update for people with the HD-dvd drive will become available giving them the option of using the external drive.

Non issue.

Microsoft will do whatever Microsoft thinks is in it's best interests. Consumer be damned. PC games are increasingly DVD only, forcing PC owners to buy new hardware - why should the 360 be any different? Time will tell...
