just recently tried the 360 hd-dvd on my comp with powerDVD and im gettin strange results lol

my spec is lacking and more than likely the problem but still

3400+ clawhammer
2gb mem
9800XT

im only using a 9800XT cos my X800pro refuses to display anything on my pj via DVI (im tryin to get this workin via vga though cos of the HDCP bit)

basically i can play hd-dvd's half fine. audio is perfect. video is a bit wierd:

hddvdwa4.jpg

the vid does actually move, very very slowely you can see sort of behind the wierd corruption. i would have thought it was cos my cpu is lacking but according to task manager it never gets above 40% load?? surely trying to decode somethin like this would make it rocket up to 100%?

ive got the latest ati drivers but the advisor program moans about that?? ive tried older drivers but powerDVD moans it cant play the hd-dvd then

could it just be cos of my poor spec or do ya think theres somethin else goin off here?

read through that link. it seems theres little chance my cpu will have anywhere near enough grunt for this. but still thats not gonna stop me from trying :D

im wondering if having DVI connected even though not used may have something to do with it

btw im using V7 of powerDVD (7.1 for the HD-DVD version is it?)

You definitely need PowerDVD 7 Ultra (about £70) for HD-DVD playback, and I very much doubt that card or your cpu will handle it anyway.

I would personally go nvidia if you get a new video card (7600GS should do fine - purevideo decoder is rumoured to be worth the asking price ontop of the card itself)

Ive just built the below rig and watched hd-dvd of MI III which works well, but I was also happy to pay extra to gaurentee decent performance - but with all the discussions I have read in regards to Hidef films dual core is a minimum

Its still relatively early days though - so you never know, good luck either way

My htpc shuttle:

37P
Conroe E4300 (stock 1.8GHz to run in)
2GB Ram
X1950
2* 320GB SATA in RAID 0
SATA DVD-RW
Vista Ultimate (32 Bit) OEM

yeah i've been readin up on a few of your HD-DVD and shuttle threads (im always in SFF lol)

been thinking of upgrading, well not so much upgrading. more changing. been thinkin about a HTPC for a while now as thats all i do with me shuttle now anyway, dont play games anymore since gettin a 360. even then the PC games i do play are things like C&C, BF2, HL2, Halo etc and they all run fine on my x800pro (before i took it out). From what i've seen the 7600 GS or GT will give me the same or better performance compared to my X800pro, just with the added bonus of being pci-e, silent and HDCP enabled :)

the spec i was looking at was an e6300 passive, 7600 either GT or GS thats again passive (been looking at the new leadtek GS that has HDMI and HDCP enabled), couple of gig of mem and an origin AE H6 or H7 HTPC case. then put my dvd-rw and/or HD-DVD drive in it

only problem is the case is a bit pricey and hard to find but will go v.well with my denon amp

but if there was even a remote chance i could play HD-DVD's on my shuttle then good stuff

I think your chances are "remote" at best - admittedly just a guess but better to be prepared for the worst (and if you find you can play them back on your present equipment then thats great) :D

GS would be a good option - but remember dvi-hdmi cables are pretty cheap now so having a hdmi direct output on the graphics isnt essential (although nice to have on a htpc), as I might have said I havent tried any games on my 7600 so Im unaware of the performance / frame rates - but at those kinds of resolutions of even a htpc you should get reasonable performance (depending on cpu also of course)

Not sure about those cases, but cases inparticular are personal choice (as long as airflow and available space are ok) so hope the build goes well if you have to go that route

My athlon 3500+ plays back 1080p h.264 video fine, your 9800 pro is a bit lacking though.

arent 3500's dual core? That might make a little difference but the biggest difference is the 7800GTX (which is a lot better than a X800) at decoding hidef

tried it and as expected its a no go. though it did play faster and better than before. cpu actually rocketed up to 100% this time lol

ah well, maybe time for an upgrade then

Single core.

The first dual core is the x2 3800+.

My X2 3800+ only just manages to play King Kong. It drops the odd frame, but it's very watchable.

My main PC is a 4400+, and this runs 50%-95% (very rarely at the top end) while playing it. Both don't use any hardware assistance. The 3800+ is the minimum Cyberlink specify for their software, so i'd go one or two models up, if you're sticking with AMD.

PS. The new (today i think) AnyDVD HD beta works a treat. No longer do you need HDCP for a digital connection to your monitor.

I think you may find you are getting hardware assistance from your graphics card - or maybe you meant something different?

I will look into AnyDVD HD, sounds interesting , thanks for that
