HD-DVD Problem

Hi

I have an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive that was at first connected to my 360 until it failed on me (RRoD) and I never bothered getting it fixed. I then decided I would connect the HD drive to my PC and I set everything up correctly with all of the correct drivers etc. and was using PowerDVD Ultra v7.3. I recall testing out a few HD-DVD's with the HD-DVD connected to my computer, all working properly and without any problems.

Ok, so about two weeks ago I formatted my system and did a fresh install of Windows XP Professional. I installed all of the correct drivers, updated my PC etc so everything is up-to-date. I decided I would connect the HD drive to my PC again because I wanted to watch a few of my HD-DVD's so I downloaded the correct drivers for the Xbox 360 drive, installed PowerDVD Ultra v7.3 and tried to run Blade Runner, to find that the picture and sound would not play properly and it kept skipping/stuttering straight away as soon as the disc loaded, so basically as soon as you see the studio name (Warner Bros. or Universal depending on disc) both the picture and sound will stutter/skip. I thought this may be down to a faulty disc or something so tried another disc only to find it had the same problem. Then I tried my Casablanca HD-DVD which previously worked, only to have the same problem yet again with skipping/stuttering sound and picture.

I have tried a few different versions of graphics card driver, from the latest to the ones I used previously on my system when the HD's worked. I have tried updating my sound drivers and still the HD-DVD's won't play properly and keep skipping/stuttering with both video and sound.

I have tried a couple of standard DVD's on the drive and they play perfectly without any problems at all, so I don't think it's the drive that is the problem. I have tried updating PowerDVD and using a different version (v8.0, the earliest one which still supported HD-DVD playback, they removed it a few updates later) and it still won't play.

I'm now pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with it and why it won't play HD-DVD's properly. Here are my computer specs if that helps at all:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2180 processor @ 3GHz
2GB DDR2 800MHz memory (dual-channel)
Radeon HD 3850 256MB (PCI-Express)
Cooler Master Real Power 520W modular power supply
Windows XP Professional
19" LG LCD monitor (with a resolution of 1680x1050)

Does anyone have any idea why HD-DVD's won't play properly on my system? If so, how do I fix this problem?

Thanks for your help.

Have you checked the CPU usage during playback? I did have a 2180/3850 combo in my original HTPC spec. It played HD-DVD's OK but not blu-ray's.

Have you tried a different OS (Windows 7 RC seems to be tailor made for Hi-def playback so far)

i found I have to use cat 8.7's with pDVD 7.3 to get HD-DVD's and BD's to work properly. any other driver just seems to break something (black screen with audio, stuttery video etc)

Also, check to see if hardware acceleration is enabled in the pDVD options

I do have the latest build of 7.3 installed also, not sure what build it is though

Have you installed 'Toshiba udf 2.5 drivers'?

I need these for XP and HD-DVD

Works fine with a 2800@3Gh

i think you only need the UDF driver so you can browse the files on the disk, so XP can see the file system on the disk

Yeah, I have the UDF driver installed. As cokecan72 said, all's that lets you do is browse the files on the disc. I have tried everything to get these HD's working but I've had no success. Since I created this thread I have tried the 8.7 Catalyst drivers with no success. I basically have no idea where to go from here tbh.
