Okay this isn't necessarily directly console related but I still thought it would be of interest to those tracking the two movie formats.

Interestingly and it's only the tracking of one retailer but HD-DVD sales have pulled back into the lead...

With Samsungs recent announcement of a dual hd-dvd/blu-ray player for christmas and possible stand alone players (they were previously exclusive) and the price of a standalone HD-DVD player dropping maybe this 'format war' isn't quite over ...
Sony claims Blu-ray "winner" in format war
maybe not.

Yeap over the past couple of weeks HD-DVD seen a few releases that suited that.
But it will no doubt all change again when night at the museum comes out in a couple of weeks on Blu-Ray.
At the moment it is just going to fluctuate depending on the movies. Though the Blu-Ray players can drop in price more than HD-DVD. Rumour has it HD-DVD players are already sold at a loss.

Aye, think you're right. The Matrix trilogy is coming out on hd-dvd in 3/4 weeks so again we'll see another spike.

Even Dreamworks has just got dual format and First Look Studios is going HD-DVD exclusive with the Bruce Beresford thriller, “The Contract”, starring Morgan Freeman, John Cussack.

Starting to think more and more that we'll be seeing 2 formats for the foreseeable future.

I thought the matrix was due to come out on both formats?

But you will have that on HD-DVD, then you will have the two pirates movies on Blu-Ray in May so it could be an interesting summer.

I sold my HD addon for my 360 yest on fleebay, thought Id get some money for it while I still could. plus the fact the 360 is to noisey for a home cinema machine, and it doesnt handle motion the best.

Will be really interesting to see how things pan out, Iv kept hold of my HD DVD films, I just plan on buying a decent multiformat player when they hit the stores.

surely a few people will of been buying blu ray films for there PS3s since its release

I have a PS3 and yet to buy a single film. Reason being there just aren't any films I want and they cost too much. The only film most people seem to be interested in is Casino Royale , but thats been given away free.

Import Blu-Ray are much cheaper but "most" are region locked.

Where as the HD-DVD line up looks much better and are region free.

Hmm. Warners are supporting both. Fox has loads of big hitters (Star Wars anyone) which are bound to be Blu-ray only.

Never bough a Star Wars movie and never will :D

Pirates of the Caribbean (1 and 2) is released next month for Blu-ray. I expect them to sell very well especially as it is around the same time as the third movie is out.

If that includes Preorders, Planet Earth HD-DVD has had an impact in US. The biggest international etailer has it in it's Top 5 Sales on it's North American site. That's a lot of preorders.

You won't be seen any Spelberg movies on either format for some time. Spelberg held off releasing anything on dvd for years and by all accounts he's insisted the same happens with his movies on the new formats as well.

Also with regards to the Matrix. The blu-ray release is being delayed since the systems pip feature does not currently work.

I assume that is the HD-DVD ones and not both formats?
I am actually considering getting this myself.

Here is a list of release dates for both formats (the link, i think, should be ok, if not feel free to remove mods)

Blu-Ray

HD-DVD

Out of both formats the only ones i am interested in at the moment are:
Pirates
Pirates 2
Night at the museum
Planet earth (depending on price)
Con Air
Rescue me season 3

on HD-DVD it on only the matrix and Midnight run i would be really keen on.

and i assume 300 will be Hi Def, if not someone should be slapped.

The blu-ray version of planet earth is at 19 in the same chart.

I want HDDVD to win because it's region free. Blue rays higher capacity doesn't seem to offer anything more in terms of picture quality.

Blu-Ray is definately more consistant than HD-DVD.

Anyone can see that from the graph posted. The fact it spiked above the Blu-Ray line is hardly a moment of awe.. not flaming, but if it was consistant then maybe, but it just looks like you're 'winner' might fall back down soon.

My point wasn't that hd-dvd is now in an awe inspiring position of dominance. More that claims from Sony that the format war was as good as over (back in January) were grossly exaggerated.

As it stands the longer both formats not only survive but increase sales the higher the chance we'll be stuck with both until the next new gen (if there is one).

If both formats continue to co-exist MS will be in a position possibly next year to push a dual format player add-on, and/or even produce a 360 with a dual format player built in. Could be interesting.

It's early days still. I'm going for HD DVD as there are more movies available on this format that I want - them being region free and cheaper is just gravy. The players are also considerably cheaper.
