If a typical HD fails, to the point of it clicking and no longer being reconised in the BIOS, what do you think the approx cost of a data recovery would be?

I would imagine that depends on the level of damage. How much data requires recovery, and how much of it you really want back!

Also... how quickly you want to get it back. Although possibly not relevant to yourself - if it was part of a RAID set it would be more challenging/expensive.

I have seen a few quotes over the years. Some would make your eyes water - but they were extreme cases with quick turnaround required.

Used one a while back at work.
We put call in at around midday, drive picked up at 3pm by courier, email at 6pm to say drive was received at their end.
Email next morning to say drive controller/firmware was shot,Drive has no model or make sticker on it so would take a bit more time to identify, around midday had phonecall and an email listing what files they could recover and costs.
We paid around £700 and the data dvd's were back to us 9am the next day, so less than 48 hours after drive failing we had the files needed.

When I used to work at PC World, if a drive was physically knackered, it would be £699 to sent it to IBAS for recovery, the price is due to requirements like a 'clean room' and the level of skill required. Don't think the amount or type of data was a factor, more of a fixed price service...
