Hi

After a recent lightning strike (see thread in general hardware) I need to replace my psu, so I'm geting a case at the same time. I thought that, while I'm doing this & paying the postage, I may as well update my hd too :D

So, my existing HD is a seagate ide 120gb (iirc) which is pretty full and ancient, but I want to add another hd with the minimum of hassle. I've heard that it's difficult to have an ide and sata drive running together, is that true?

Is there a simple option in the 250gb range that would work with my mobo & give me as little hassle as possible - with all my recent disasters (my bank 'lost' my pay cheque last month, which was nice, my pc and router have just gone up in smoke & I think my house ins may have lapsed :( ) I need to keep it as simple as poss.

However, I'd like to order it this afternoon, so please help!!

Thanks

Well, I was thinking about this one: Samsung SpinPoint T HD401LJ 400GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

or maybe: Samsung SpinPoint T HD321KJ 320GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Would either work easily?

Quietness would be a bonus as it sits in my living room.

Any help appreciated!

The best £ per GB are the 320 and 500GB models IIRC. Either of them to would be fine though, from what I have read on the forums the Western Digital 500GB AAKS model is the fastest about and is supposedly quiet to (I think its £63).

It should be a simple case of plugging in your new SATA drive, and once you reach windows, load up disk management (in control panel -> administrative tools) and set it up by right clicking on it. Did you want to use the SATA drive as your windows drive?

Check your bios is set to IDE/LEGACY mode to use the SATA drive without having to install any drivers.

Thanks for that, now I've got t'internet at home again (using my laptop) I can try to sort it out!

It would be best to have the new drive running windows, but that would mean re-loading it and generally, a bit of hassle. I think I'll just use it for loading any new games, programs etc and make the most of it long term, unless it's likely to make a big difference running windows off the new drive?

Are the WD drives higher regarded than the Samsungs? Last time I looked into it (a couple of months ago) the sammys were the ones to go for.

Thanks
