HD on SD

Just a curious question. What would happen if i tried to watch HD content ( 720 ) on a normal SD tv ? :confused:

The receiver or player would down-scale the picture suitable for your TV.

So playing my Hd files through a ps3 onto a standard tv would work fine. Kind of like compressing the picture ?

cool, thanks for the help guys. One more question. I just converted an .mkv file to an .avi and it went from 500mb to 2.3GB, is this right or have i done something a little stupid ?

mkv and avi are containers. But if you went from a x264 codec to divx or xvid, then yes there will be a size increase to maintain quality.

no im not trying to play MKV files as i know it doesnt play them. I think i did convert it from an x264 codec to Xvid. Does that mean that the x264 codec is much more efficient ?. I would stream the files but my laptops HD isnt very large so i use an external beasty. Finding it all a bit of a challenge to get these 720 mkv files off my mac and into a format that the ps3 will read :/

I use mkv2vob.

Very easy to use and take's less than a minute :-)

Download this http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.exe

Once you opened the program, set output file extension to vob.Then add your MKV file and convert.1-2 mins later it's done and ready to be played from PS3 HDD or memory stick w/e!

problem with that being is that its a windows only program as far as i can tell. Also will VOB files work on a Xbox 360 ?

VOB files are the same sort of container as used in a DVD etc. They work on virtually any DVD/blu-ray player.
