I've had a Sanyo PLV-Z3 for a couple of years now, and it's absolutely fantastic for films and the odd DVD boxsets I watch.
As a TV replacement - forget a projector. Luckily I don't watch any TV, so it's not a big deal
I've got a 5ft wide screen (~68" diagonal 16:9) and it's sat about a foot further than the end of my bed - so the image pretty much fills my field of vision
Coupled with a good surround system, it's better than being at the cinema (as you don't have to deal with other people!)
