How do you get HD quality sound from speakers?

Hold on, kind of the wrong question.

He wants to know

in his words

"Can you buy external speakers and get high definition sound"

So basically, how do you get HD sound on speakers via the PS3.

I'm not really sure what you are getting at with this. What is it your brother is actually looking to use the speakers for, and what is the budget? It appears that the "HD" label is currently being used to brand everything homecinema related.

It is down to the amplifier as to what type of audio can be output. Currently the main standards are Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS. However there are new emerging standards that are only on Blueray and HD-DVDS which require an amplifier that is cabable of decoding it.

Once the sound had been decoded, you then need the relevent number of speakers connected to the amplifier.

Well, basically, he wants some speakers with the best quality sound you can get.

He has a HDTV and a PS3.

I think he needs to give us a budget, or otherwise I might suggest these:

...or their bigger brothers...

You *do* realise that's just an ALBA midi system from the 80s speaker there on the floor and some 70s glass bowls stuck in a frame on the top?

I knew there was something odd about them when I heard a pair.

Is he needing an AV amp to go with the speakers or does he already have this?

I know you've said the budget's pretty high, but what ballpark? This is an area where 10k can be spent very quickly..

Well, the budget will be pretty high.. he just spent like 1.5k on a TV.

You'll need to find out a budget, and you will need more than just speakers. You will also need to find out what size his room is, and if it will be just for films or for music and films.

As mentioned above, saying he has a pretty high budget is not a wise thing to say to audiophiles and hifi enthusiasts where 5 to 10k is perfectly normal. If I put together a budget system I would be past the £1k barrier.

You will need very decent kit to tell HD sound apart from standard stuff.

By HD sound I presume you mean SACD/DVDA and HD DTS/DD tracks on HD movies right?

"Can you buy external speakers and still get high definition sound"
Well I'm confused by the use of 'still' - if he's currently using his tv speakers for the sound then he's not getting 'hd' sound (whatever that means).

Tell him he'll be able to get massively better sound than he's currently getting from about £1k up or about half that second hand.

Well to be honest.. I have no idea what you just said.

Are you saying there isn't really a difference between HD sound and normal?

Depends. I don't think the OP was actually talking about HD sound.
However, taking a literal interpretation of it, then in theory, the subject could be SACD, in which case to take full advantage, you'd need both an amp and pair of speakers capable of running upto 50kz. There really aren't that many around.

Most hi-end speakers don't use supertweeters because of their limited benefit, though I have heard a pair running and felt that they did add something, though it wasn't what you'd expect. In theory, humans can't hear much above 20kz, and in my case (and age), it's probably much lower. So I know it didn't add any additional treble. What it did seem to do was improve placement of instruments in the mix. Whether it's worth paying the extra, well I guess that's a question of how much money you have to blow on that kind of improvement.

Either I'm misunderstanding of everyone else is, but I read this as "Can you buy an amp that will decode/output Dolby TrueHD sound or DTS HDMA?
I know some will be able to output the pcm audio direct from the PS3 but I haven't heard of an that will decode HD audio streams.
