Hi there! I think a comparison of several (if not lots) of hard drives models would help people on this forum help decide which hard drive to buy next. I have HD Tune results for two Samsung F1s, an old Maxtor and a new Hitachi Deskstar. If we had some Western Digitals on here and maybe a few others we could build up quite a good little cheat sheet of hard drive speeds. So please, post up your own HD Tune results, with as much information about your hard drives as possible!

Problem is that everybody's system is different. I have seen Samsung f1 750gb outerform the 1tb drives in people's system and vica versa. Moboboard and chispet can make a big difference.

A quick google shows burst rates of up to 200mb/sec and much better minimum performance for your samsung t1 1gb drive.

So nice idea but I suspect that unless you take averages of peoples results with the same drive, then the database is going to be meaningless.

EDIT: James, just to prove my theory how about posting your test results for the Maxtor drive?

I agree that each and every hard drive is very different, but there will be a trend. I don't mind chucking Min/Max/Avg and Burst Rate into Excel, and putting up a chart every now and again if we get enough. People will have to take this with a pinch of salt, but I honestly think it will help users a fair bit!

Hard drives will show only small differences. It's peoples setup which shows the biggest differences.

I'll do a run on my 750Gb samsung tonight and see how it compares.

Here's my samsung f1 750.:(

Now this has made me realise I must look into the extremely poor transfer rates but it still beats your for both burst rates and acces time.

In fact the spread of your access is all over the place. Suggest you look into that yourself with your drive.

Speeds a little on the low side* since I reset CMOS after putting in my new OCZ Blade memory - I'll prolly put up a new shot once I retweak the BIOS.

Got another one of these coming tomorrow for some RAID goodness.

Temperature is on the high side of normal as its a really really warm day.

*Prior to CMOS reset the avg. was 133 and max 167 with 198MB/s burst.

That's quite a large thread with all sorts of RAID setups though.....I think this thread of just single drives is a good idea if someone actually makes an excel table and sorts the info out.

Could be quite useful.

Will have benches of a Hitachi 750Gb 7K1000.B 16mb drive and a 1TB Caviar Black tomorrow. For now here is my Hitachi 500Gb T7K500 16mb drive:

We could do with a proper thread with just benchmarks (not comments) and collated results - the big benchmark thread has become a bit derailed at times.

Ok, here's my Maxtor drive result, let's see how it differs!

Looks like it's quite comparable to Ease's results, apart from my burst rate, which is ass.

O RLY? Looks like chalk and cheese to me

Yours Ease

Minimum 54.7 38.0
Maximum 88.8 93.8
Average 78.7 76.9
Access 15.2 16.0
Burst 91.7 158.2

If you hadn;t have told me they were the same drive I would never have guessed.

Okay you average ends up the same but that's it really.

This is already really interesting to me! I'll put together some tables and such in a couple days; moving into my new house this weekend!

Here is my brand new WD Caviar Black 1Tb.

Does the transfer rate look a bit low? I was expecting morelike 95-100ish? I've been trying to disable AAM but hitachi ftool tells me it can't change any settings?

Do the Caviar Blacks come with AAM disabled or enabled?
