According to a post on ChileHardware, AMD is working on a Radeon HD 2900 Pro card and the reason behind this is that the model was mentioned in a recent Beta driver.
However, this isn't the RV670, as it's using the R600 GPU, although we'd expect that AMD has done some modifications to it, so it won't compete with the HD 2900 XT.
The driver string doesn't reveal too much information - "ATI Radeon HD 2900 PRO" = ati2mtag_R600, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9403
ChileHardware also claims that this new card should cost around US$200, which seems a little bit too cheap to us, but with AMD's current pricing, you'll never know, but we'd guess it'll be closer to $249.

Would be nice as I can see ATi having one last rehash of the R600 since they have some time before their next release. And with NVidia ready to launch another mid-ranger in November this could be ATi's answer.
Obviously pure rumour and speculation so far as we have never seen any specs to my knowledge

Nvidia's card in November is the high-end G92's supposedly.

i know, im not talking about that

im saying will it be the equivalent of between the 8600gts and the 8800gts (for competetive purposes)

A well-priced 2900 Pro would do wonders for ATI, especially if it followed suit from what the X1950 Pro achieved.

If it did follow suit to the x1950pro I would not hesitate in buying one....maybe two :P

yeah you can picture it when a load of people have moved on to pci-e 2, and people will say whats the best value pci-e 1 card is. the 2900pro should be ok.

just hope its priced well enough to really drive down those gts prices

Nope It's the G90 that will be the high end AFAIK.

And yes a 2900 Pro would be a big boost for AMD I say go for it.

So its competeting against the G92. Hopefully it wont drink electricty like the r600 and the mod dhould make it good at aa maybe?????

Pretty sure that nvidia decided against the normal naming process this time... G92 being the 9800GTX..

I apologise if i am mistaken :D

Well its going to be a cut down R600 so will still like the electricity but it will be more reasonable.

wouldnt go as far as to say 'rock' , maybe on the next release theyll be closer ;)

Depends how you define "rock" there certainly now beating the GTS in most instances. The DX10 driver has a LOOOOOOOONG way to go yet though.

How much more performance if between a 8600 & 8800 GTS would this be more than a X1650 512MB do you wonder as this might be a neat little upgrade with DX10 capabilities for my Bro's gaming comp which is my old one with only a res of 1024x768 as he was going to my my 640GTS after i upgrade to Nvidia's next gen card.
