So i got an XFX HD4890 from a friend as he had upgraded to a 6 series ATI/AMD card so had this laying arround and he no longer needed it.

Now i currently run a HD3870 running fine but when i install the HD4890 everything powers up like it should but i get no output from the card on my Monitor or HDTV no matter what DVI port i use. I have no idea if i get any beeps or not as i don't have the speaker for my case (antec 900).

My power supply is a 500w at the moment but does come with 2 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors which i connected to make sure are inserted properly.

So anyone have any ideas on what i can try to get this card functional again.

Thanks

Double check your monitor cable. Plug it into both ports see if that works.
Is any windows sounds coming through your desktop speakers or headphones?

Are there any lights on on the graphics card, presumably any red lights near the rear (power connectors)? These are lights to indicate power to the graphics card.

If possible unplug any non-necassery power using items and then see if it works (i.e any case fans, external HDD etc)
What is your full system spec? It could be there is not enough power being supplied to boot up fully.

Tried plugging in my monitor and TV on both ports without luck and i made sure they were connected properly.

Can't hear any sound via my speakers or headphones.

Didn't look for any lights on the card but will do next time i try it.

My system spec is Phenom II X2 545, Gigabyte GA-MA-770UD3, 4X1Gb DDR2-800.

My current PSU which is a budget temporary one till i upgrade it has the following ratings: [+3.3v - 28a] [+5v - 28a] [+12v1 - 20a] [+12v2 - 20a] [-12v - 0.8a] [+5Vsb - 2.0a]

I will also try running my computer with nothing powered apart from the very basic just to try and get any display on my screen.

Tried the card again with the minimum amount of power connectors connected but not luck there. I didn't see any light on the card to indicate a fault.

I also tried the card in a 2nd older machine with a lower rated Enermax PSU which happened to have a speaker in the case and i got 3 beeps in the following manner Beep...BeepBeep which would indicate a graphics card error as listed in the motherboard manual.

Im regularly changing graphics cards, as in 10 in an hour and I've seen this problem.

Try:

Reseating it in the slot

Try another port on the card for your monitor cable

Try changing to another graphics slot on your mother board if you have multiple

Try pulling the psu lead out and pressing the power button, leave it for a bit then put your power back in and giving it a go.

Its a weird issue and there doesnt seem to be a 100% solution for it...

Sounds dead to me bro.

IDEA: Take the lower power PSU out of your other machine, and use only that to power the GPU while everything else is plugged into your cases power supply.

If that doesn't work, it's gone, maybe static damage or something, did you buy it off your mate or did he give it to you?

My mate gave it to me saying he had it stored away after he had upgraded.

It doesn't look it it had any noticeable faults but i guess it is dead which is a shame although not too bothered as i didn't spend any money on it.

Perhaps get your friend to test it one last time in his rig. If the symptoms are the same as what you're experiencing then it's dead for sure.

try another card, if the other card works your card is toast. i had the same problem with my old nvidia 8800 it just died.
(sidenote: can you even see the bios startup screen, if you cnt i rekon ur cards gne)

Have now tried it in 3 systems without getting any display from it and i know those 3 systems are fully working with their main graphics cards so this 4890 is a dead card.

Thanks for the help but looks like i will need to go back to my 3870 till i can get something new.

Yep it's worth a try...

Strip the card, clean off Thermal Paste, place in oven for 10mins on 220 Gas Mark 6. It may work, depends what's damaged the card, if it works great, if not, no win no lose really.
