Deciding whether or not to upgrade my 6990. Not sure whether to do it? This weeks deal on the AMD 290 is tempting! Not sure the 290 is really an upgrade though in terms of performance. Really finding it difficult to upgrade from my 6990!

6990 is pretty similar to a 7970Ghz, so yes it's definitely an upgrade, plus you don't have to deal with crossfire problems/stuttering.

You using the reference cooler?

Yes, the original cooler.

This is the thing making my decision difficult. I am sick of crossfire and all of the associated issues - yet, upgrading to a single GPU setup will probably mean little performance gain at the moment.

Any card you get will be quieter, then. So no problems there :p
I know the feel. I got rid of my 6990 for the same reason.

Gutted that I missed that OcUK deal on the 7990. Am definitely tempted by a 290 though.

Edit: Silly me, there seem to be more 7990s left in the deal.

I would either get a 7990 like I did, other places are selling them for 400, or wait and see what comes out next year, I wouldn't get a 290 it will be around 25% faster, at best when crossfire is working properly. You would get less hassle with the 290 and it is a very good card for the money but it aint Much faster than you got.

The 7990 is amazingly quiet. The only card I have ever used that made less noise was my GTX 470 on a Zalman V3000F. That thing was damn near silent.

I run a pair of 670 Jetstreams and when they get to about 60% fan speed they start making a really annoying whirring sound, similar to the MSI Twin Frozr. The 7990 just makes a low hum rather than an annoying whirr, so even at 100% fans it's not really any louder or more annoying than my radiator fans (which are high SP so again make a pretty low hum).
