Hey people

I need some advice and help of you friendly lot.

I have recently got a Ati hd7870 graphics card very cheap of a friend but i cant get it to output a display, the card is currently with a friend of mine he is testing it for me, cause im very busy with work so don't have time to test it.
Anyway my friend tested the card through the dvi display on the back and tis is what happened:-
graphics card does do a display but it is not right its stops at bios screen lines everywhere and red lines all over screen will be testing HDMI tomorrow, have had to remove from system as system freezes.

Any ideas or advice please ?

Could be that the memory is gone.

Would the memory cause that and is it repairable?

People tend to remark that it's the memory chips which give out first, though I don't exactly know why (maybe because they heat up more / sometimes have less efficient cooling than the gpu). The graphical corruption you describe sounds like it could well be that. As a last resort, you could try the oven method.

Basically puting your GPU in an Oven and baking it, till it reflows.

First, I would try cleaning the card to make sure there's no hidden clumps of dust.

I would make sure your mobo BIOS is up to date before you do anything else.

Hmm ok I have never taken the case of a graphics card to clean it but I will try it and the oven trick looks simple to do lol. I will try a bios update first ok.

Until what reflows, all the solder joints??? Pretty extreme way to fix a suspected dry solder joint. More likely to get solder where you don't want it I'd have thought.

Don't know mate, just passing on the info l tend to replace if something goes U/S, luckily l have no end of tech kit to keep me going if one fails.

This oven method a couple of questions cause me and my freind are going to attempt it on 2 cards on Wednesday,

but what do u do about the Pci express power plugs on the card are they safe in the oven with that heat please?
and do u put the card upside down Gpu facing down or up?
and also i have seen people use tin foil on the bottom of the bakeing tray to reflect the heat up on the card aswell.?

Just get a new card/money back It's not a good sign when you have to roast your GPU like a sunday chicken in order to get it to work and IF it does .. how long will it last ? I'd also be having words with your friend who sold you a piece of junk.

the card we are trying it one i have had for ages and it has just started with the lines and stuff so we are doing the oven process.

Yeah but we are hoping the oven trick will get the card working until I can get some cash togther to get a new graphics card.
