Do I just go for it and buy one?

Lost 1 GTX480 so I need something faster than 2 480s were!

Nvidia seem to be taking too long with Keplar, I want to play BF 3 all maxed out again!

you may need to consider 2 7970s or 7950s in that case.

Also, what res are you gaming at?

2 7970's to run BF3 at max?

I have 1 sapphire 7970 and I run BF3 with everything maxed and I get no lag what so ever. Haven't checked my FPS but If I remember I can do it tonight!

Well one 7970 will alow you to play BF3 all maxed out or a 580GTX (which I have) but if you want faster than 2 480's you'll need to either get 2 580's, or 2 7970's or 7950's.

2 480's is already a lot of GPU power. Maybe itd be worth just egtting a second hand 480 cheap to go sli again ?

One 7970 isn't as fast as SLI 480s.

A fair point, I wasn't thinking that he may want to stick SLI/Crossfire.

One 7970 will play games maxed, however for similar GPU power then more than one card will be needed for sure.

I thought 1 High OCed 7970 beat 2 GTX480s?

I've seen SLI 480s hit 13000 in 3dmark 11.

About the best I've seen on air from a 7970 is around 10500.

Oddly enough I just researched it as a friend of mine was looking to upgrade.

EVGA seem to be clearing a pile of old stock and have 480s on their site brand new for $250 each. When we looked into it it was best for him to buy two. It worked out $30 more than a 7950 and $150 less than a 7970.

He's more than accustomed to running SLI as he currently runs a 460 2win and surround, so going SLI 480 was the least disruptive of his options and he gets to stick to familiar territory. Plus we concluded that 1.5gb of vram was enough.

Good thing he has a Gigabyte Guerilla really as it allows him to space the cards miles apart, and he has a brand new HAF (the smaller one) sitting in a box as he ordered it and then the Phantom came out. Phantom is rubbish for airflow though so he's going to re-case his rig when the 480s arrive..

But yes, sorry for waffling on.. There is no way in hell a 7950 or 7970 will offer the same performance as SLI 480. The 480 is right around on par with a 570, and I believe in SLI offer the same sort of results as a 590.

If you've still got 1 480, I'd just get another one again second hand. Should be able to find a reasonable deal. Then keep waiting for keplar :p
