HDD and sata problem?

Just got a 4th hdd and tried connecting it up.
Plugging it into the 4 black sata connection on a Asus a8n premium motherboard.

I got an error after the OS select screen comes up saying incompatable drive.

So I tried connecting it to one of the red sata ports. It starts booting then says please set up a raid by pressing f5 or ctrl+S. But nothing happens when I try either of the keys.

So I've removed one of my existing hdd and plugged the new one in there and it works fine.

Any idea what's happening? do you have to set master/slave on sata as I have never had to do that in the past?

Have you tried changing the option to JBOD to see if it finds it ok with that? It may be something to do with the raid options.

where would I find that?

as when it says press x button to launch raid setup. it doesn't do anything. Ive tried updating the drivers still doesn't respond.

No master or slave, i thought it might not have supported SATAII drives, but a quick check of the specs says it does.
How about changing the boot drive order so it only selects your actual boot drive?

I take it you're dual booting then? Do you get the same error regardless of which OS you pick? By introducing the extra disk you may have inadvertantly introduced a new DiskID which is screwing up the boot.ini

Not dual booting, but I've got the xp repair console on as a option.

OK, I missed this first time round so can we go back to the beginning for a minute.

You've got 3 drives working in three of the NVidia ports on the board, when you add a fourth it gives you an error loading XP? Do you have a note of the exact error text?

Which port number is the free one?

After you plug the new drive into one of the "working" ports have you tried plugging the removed old drive into the free port?

When you attach the drive to the red (Silicon Image) ports what happens if you don't press F5 and just let it boot?

Right I almost killed my pc. So I think I'll leave it till next month when I'll buy vista and reinstall.

But what I got was hard drive configuration error, when plugging the new drive into the black sata sockets.

And raid not setup when connecting to red which then said press f5 to set raid up which then didn't do anything when I press f5.

Then I put it back to the normall hdd configuration and got missing ntdlr, Bit of fiddling I then got GRUB error 17.

I can't find my xp disc anywhere. So was getting angry. Then remembered I still had a vista beta disk lying around. But that crashed on install. But then somehow xp booted up after that.

SO I don't think I'll fiddle until I either find my xp disc or buy vista. But I chucked bundles of cd's out when I moved house and I think xp might of been in there.

Sorry can't help with this as i don't really know the board. I were just doing a bit of reading on the board and it mentioned that it has the option for this. Try having a quick look in the manual to see if it mentions in there.

Also just noticed this it may not be your situation though but thought i would post anyway.

Due to the limitation of all the chipsets of Raid controllers, currently volume over 2TB will not be recognized correctly.

On a spec sheet I found this:

Storage Controller Type(s) DMA/ATA-133 (Ultra) x 2, Serial ATA x 4, Serial ATA II x 4

so perhaps the black ones dont support SATA II and you need to set a jumper on the hard drive to use those ports?
