Ahoy!
I've got some WD 640GB Black Drives (2) and a SATA DVD drive, Asus Maximus Gene II, Core2Duo, 4GB ram, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I'm having issues where ever now and then my computer grinds to a halt with high CPU usage and when I look in resouce monitor the disk queue length is massive and the hdd activity light in on 100% of the time.

When I look in the bios the 'Configure SATA as...' is set to IDE. Is this correct or should it be AHCI (the only other option is raid and the hdds are not raided).

Any help will be appreciated!

AHCI will boost performance with high queue depths, but it won't normally make much difference on a desktop PC, so there's almost certainly something else going on (some rogue background process presumably).
