Hi all,

Apologies if I’ve missed a thread already running on this...

Office PC has a 1Tb HDD (platter type). I’ve bought a 128Gb SSD for Windows install to speed it up.

Any recommendations for (free) software to clone the original hard drive? I’ve done a small amount of reading and quite a few programs can’t deal with cloning a partition to a much smaller drive...

Thanks!

Does the 1Tb have partitions for the OS or do have a single 1Tb partition to fit onto the 128Gb one?

A lot of people recommend Reflect but I'm not sure it will work in this instance, I would always advise a fresh install onto the SSD as over the years OS's gather some right rubbish clinging onto them.

What bledd said, I used macrium reflect free version to clone a 250gb drive onto a 120gb drive. Dead easy.

As said in my case there was only about 80gb used on the old drive, no additional partitions etc to complicate things. It just works.

A clean install is preferable, but sometimes not worth the hassle, depends on the individual circumstances.

If it's just an office pc and you're confident it's clean, then I'd go with cloning.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually used a program called Aomei Backupper. Seemed to do the trick! Can’t believe how much faster even a cheap SSD can be - bliss!

Yup, ssd is probably the single biggest general performance upgrade in the last decade.

Can bring 15yo systems back to life, if they are just used for office /Internet.
