Hdd Dead?

well just a few minutes ago i finished watching a movie on my pc, and i started to notice a spinning up then clicking/clunking noise coming from my WD Caviar Special Edition 320gb naturally i thought wtf :confused:

at first i thought it was the psu but soon realised it was hdd number 2 which is actually near my psu on a seperate shelf built for it (thermaltake armor case) and an outtake fan infront of it, i then rebooted the pc and it took longer than usual got into windows and there was no output from hdd 2 couldnt see any of the partitions etc and it seems the clicking has stopped now including the spinning, i guess my hdd is now dead can any one confirm or has ever had this problem?

it was bought from ocuk b grade section about 3 months ago, where do i stand or am i screwed, the hdd seemed new when i bought it (wrapped up in WD packaging, hadnt been initialized etc)

im actually on another pc now, would i be ok to turn my pc on even if the hdd is dead? i wish to run some diagnostic utilities etc just to confirm

Yes it does sound like it has died, sadly thats how it goes with Hard Drives. They never give you very much warnning, they just go, I've had a few that weren't even in my PC for more than 24 hours before they said "Game Over"

Hard Drives genrally don't come inititalized mate, they all come blank, and un formatted, ready for the user to forrmat and install the Operating System of their choice be it Windows or Linux, or whatever.

As to where you stand, well first thing you need to do is to contact OcUk although I suspect now that it's 3 months old your better of contacting Western Digital, get an RMA number off them and they will ask for your old drive back, and they send you out a replacement drive.

yea i guess its the gamble you take sometimes, ill be taking it out tommorow so ill see how the warrenty stands tommorow, what a shame i thought wd drives were good i guess the heat hasnt helped etc

Any drive can fail at any given time, it's the same with any electronics.
