picked up a 750gig WD scorpio black from the US just before all this flood malarky kicked off. this morning I took my laptop downstairs and simply set it down on the table and the fall sensor kicked in for some reason (I can tell because the activity light turns Amber). when it had decided that the laptop had finished falling the drive wouldn't spin up and just made buzzing noises at me. windows quickly became unresponsive and upon restart, I could not boot from the drive at all. it would simply sit there and buzz at me. this is strange because I did not handle the laptop roughly at all. has anyone had a similar experience?

just to add insult to injury according to the wd site the drive warranty expired last week, despite me only owning the sodding thIng for about 5 months

ok, through some freak of nature ive got it to spin up when plugged in (am now using it in a caddy), but it now makes horrible screeching noises, sounds like the heads are scraping along the platters :(

is there anyone who has experienced this, and (i know this probably sounds stupid) is the drive definately done for?
