never done it before. is it difficult, how much would i be looking at for cheap second hand lappy sata hdd and OS, it will only be used to surf and right essays on.

another question guys, once the new os is installed the lappy hardware will work? or will i have to download individual updates for each bit of hardware ie optical drive, wireless internet thingy?........sorry for such noob qustions.

and yes the hdd is dead, popped it into my external drive and it has 40,000,000 errors.

cheers in advance.

I would say you would be better getting a new harddisk the margin between say an Ebay second hand and online new can be very small. Given that you won't get a warranty and you don't know what abuse the drive has suffered under it's previous owner...

A new HD isn't a massive amount:
OCZ Vertex 30Gb

Ohh whoops...;) :D wrong one  I meant:
Fujitsu 160GB 5400RPM SATA 8MB Cache - OEM

Don't forget MS rolls up new drivers in their OS service packs...
