hdd error in bootup

Switched my PC on today to be told the HDD has detected an error and I need to press F1 to resume... so I do, and it gets me into windows. I carry on as usual but later get a windows message asking me to backup as the hdd has detected an error.

Is it safe to assume the HDD is on its way out? Luckily I've got everything backed up anyway so if it does die on me I'll just need a new C drive for windows, but why would I be getting this msg out of the blue, could it be something insignificant like maybe a dodgy sata cable?

I need to run some sort of hdd error scanning software, which is the most efficient quickest one please?

Also, what C drive do I go for as a replacement? £50 max!

I would try disconnecting the SATA cable from the motherboard and HD and reconnected it. As even though my POST and BIOS screen showed the drive, it's been plagued by random issues. As a result I plan to get a new SATA cable with the clips on, to make sure it doesn't work lose again over time.

Still try the manufacturer's utility tool, to check S.M.A.R.T. status and maybe scan it.
