Hi Guys,

Today I transferred my system over from my old Bitfenix Shinobi to my new Corsair 750D sticking a 7990 in to replace my 7970 too. ;)

Problem is one of my Samsung F3 drives (which is striped with another one) seems to be having problems with its "Spin Up Time" according to S.M.A.R.T.

Current = 1
Worst = 1
Threshold = 25

Before I rule out that the drive is faulty is there any chance this is a phantom reading.

I find it odd that its having problems the same day I transferred all my case contents over, as I was very careful with everything.

I had this with one of my drives about a year ago, it only happened once, and it has been working fine since. I'm not sure if the raid controller stops one drive from spinning up until the other has spun up first, but that's what mine sounds like it is doing. Maybe that's what causes it.

I wouldn't worry about spin-up time unless you see a lot of them. Certainly nothing to worry about if it's a one off whilst you're doing something weird. They can be caused by a failing motor in the drive or weak PSU causing a slow spin-up, but really it's a time-out threshold being breached, which can also happen due to other reasons.

For instance, I could guarantee a spin-up error on my old system by putting the system to sleep, and then hitting the spacebar to wake it up again before it had properly gone down. By the time the drives had sorted themselves out, there was a time-out on the spin-up threshold, and it would pop up an erroneous spin-up error on the SMART statistics.

I've restarted the computer loads of times and run a few programs and they are all failing the smart test on the spin up time measure.

The drives seems to work fine and doesn't seem to be running slow or anything.

So weird

I would get the data off pronto and RMA the drive if it's still in warranty. :)

Well the Samsung drive failed!

I turned the PC on and it started clicking really loudly and just died.

What RAID are you using? Software or hardware RAID? Any details about the RAID setup might help.

Stelly

I was using software and it was just striped with my other F3 1TB to form a 2TB drive space to store all of my Steam games on. So I lost all of that but that’s not too much of a biggie as I can just download them again.

Unfortunately one of my WD 3Tb Red drives has now started playing up so I have had to RMA that. Just can’t believe my luck this weekend two dodgy drives in 2 days!

IMO never disregard SMART errors and or diagnostic failures when testing with the drive manufacturers diagnostic / health checking software unless really doesn’t matter if stored data is lost.

True, just in case you are becoming influenced the posts suggesting you should disregard SMART errors and carry on. I for sure would not have any confidence using a drive with SMART errors. ;)

Yeah thanks, I don't take any risks with HDD's which is why my 3TB drives are mirrored so when this happens I dont lose anything.

FedEx picked up my drive today (courtesy of WD) so hopefully should have my replacement soon.

The Samsung was way out of warranty so nothing much I can do there unfortunately, they are great drives though.
