Major symptom for a while has been disk usage at 100% with general use and now its extended to transferring files. Now I cannot even transfer a file from one folder to desktop without it giving an I/O error at 99% each time. Also on several ocassions the laptop has acted as if no OS exists and I am then forced to reset the system to factory settings which solves the above issues temporarily but it always seems to come back.

The HDD in my dad's laptop had very similar symptoms a month ago and same warning about current pending sectors. Sometimes it wouldn't start. The same day I began having a look at it, the Win 10 Fall update finally came in on his system, and I let it install without having much hope for it succeeding given the problems. Surprisingly, all the symptoms disappeared after the update and various drive monitoring tools gave it the all-clear. Have since upgraded it with an SSD but kept it in the laptop as an extra backup drive in what was the DVD drive bay, and formatted it, and all good since, no warnings or odd behaviour.

He'd never done a fresh install of Windows 10, had only upgraded from Windows 7 a couple of years ago. Don't know if that could have had anything to do with it.

It could likewise just be toast. And should definitely be looking at a new main drive. But maybe keep hold of that one and format it, see what happens.
