Right, it appears one of my drives has failed (sod :( )

It didnt have anything important on it that I can remember, it was just games and programs (so most of it is reinstallable from CD).

However, I can't remember exactly what was on it! I'd want to check it and see if there is anything that can be done to give it one last check and backup.

It makes a clicking/knocking sound, which apparently means it's the heads not reading properly.

The wonderous internet seems to say that sticking the drive in the freezer overnight may help, any comments yay or nay regarding this?

Anything else which could be done for free? (if not, to the freezer it goes!)

If only it had waited til I had my new system built up, where all the non-recoverable data is going to be on two 500Gb drives in a Raid1 !

Another machine won't do any good if it's not detected at all. I'd try the freezer ttick, don't need to do it overnight as after a time it's not going to get any colder and you risk condensation.

can you see it in disk management

if so, try using testdisk to recover the partitions, it's freeware and works really really quickly
