HI all

I am slowly building my first PC, and I have know have a small dilema in choosing which HDD to go with !!

My first choice was; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-036-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940

and I have know considered this one as I have a Barracuda in my old system of 6 years with no problems; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-142-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940

and someone has thrown another one into the works; http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-120-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940

Can anyone make this decision easier for myself??? Like I said earlier I have had a Barracuda in my old system and has given me no problems in 6 years, so leaning with this one, but I am open to peoples knowledge and suggestions.

Thank you for your attention and assistance

I own both the Western Digital and the Samsung drives you have listed.

Western Digital is quieter.

In terms of speed, they are very similar under normal day-to-day usage and you wont notice any difference unless you bring out some benchmarking programs.

If I had to buy again, I would go with the Western Digital.

Ive got the WD 250gb version of the drive you mention and its amazingly quiet and really fast. Very happy with it

All good drives (apart from possibly the Seagate with the dodgy firmwares on some drives) but out of those three I would go for the Western Digital :)

The samsung would be the least reliable, but also possibly the fastest, I'm suprised you find it noiser than the WD as I've always found samsung drives to be almost silent - but I always keep in mind to replace them before 18 months is up as I find they have a tendancy to die around then.

Normally I'd avoid WD drives but their AAKS drives are very very good...

End of the day I would stick with the seagate personally... its probably fractionally slower than the other 2 and its a bit hit and miss with the noise (some really quiet others averagely noisey) but all my seagates have kept going flawlessly for years and years, meanwhile I've binned a good number of WD and samsungs.

I have a 500Gb Samsung Spinpoint, it was recommended as the quietest drive when I bought it at least. Don't know if that's changed. Wasn't aware of any reliability issues with them either.

I dunno if I'd go as far as to say reliability issues, just that in comparison to the seagates they've been much less reliable for me...

I would say that the Segates are reliable, however, the 7200.11 drive I bought was noisy and runs very hot, compared to both the WD and Samsung. WD runs coolest, quietest and uses the least power.

Thanks to all your responses, much appreciated :)

Judging by your advice it looks like the WD has it

I bow to your superior knowledge ;)

Thanks
George :p
