OK so my Samsung HDD finally gave up the ghost over the weekend. It's devolved into a ticking clock and will be consigned to the bin shortly. It's out of warranty so what are peoples opinions on a replacement. I cannot afford the same capacity in solid state form so will be looking at cheap but reliable alternatives. I'm currently pondering on the WD Caviar black due to the 5 year warranty. Any recommendations much appreciated.

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated. Yes I'm thinking of sticking to the idea of a WD Black. The five year guarantee is a no brainer considering the Samsung lasted 3.5 years and that was without heavy usage to be fair.

I have a Samsung Spinpoint sp2004c 2Gb which is 10 years old and have been using it for steam games and currently has my OS on it. It does not match the speed benchmark or real world objectivity of the wd20EARS (western digital).

I have had a maxtor diamondmax and Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B fail on me. I have a seagate ST3500641AS and a WD10CEACS still going strong.
