HDD No Longer Detected!

My PC of ~3 years of age has decided to pack in, it BSODed for a while then didn't detect the HDD at times on startup, but a quick reset usually did the trick. Now it doesn't detect the HDD at all, I've checked all the connections, tried different ports etc, still no luck!

Any way of reviving it or am I on the market for a new HDD? It's SATA by the way.

Even if you manage to get it up and running again I would recommend getting the files you need off of it while you can and replacing it, you've had the beginnings of the problems and it'll most likely continue.

What HDD? And have you tried it in other PC?

If it works in other PCs try replacing BIOS battery. Empty battery can cause really wacky symptoms (including boot problems and not finding drives) considering how "unimportant" part it is.

Haven't tried it in another PC, need to find a willing participant to let me play about with their PC before I can do that! I'll have a look around and let you know.

I believe it's a Seagate HDD, 80GB, not sure on exact specs as it was a while ago and my PC is through in the other room so I can't be bothered going to check just now! :P

Ok... I thought I had solved this problem, bought a new HDD and stuck it in and it worked fine for a few weeks. Now the new HDD is not being detected, so I think I'd like to try replacing the BIOS battery as mentioned...

How do I go about doing that?!
