Ok,I have just knocked my external hdd off my ledge roughly 30cm onto the floor however i managed to grab the usb cable so it had a softer landing, Now i have plugged it in and it doesnt come up with anything and listening to the hdd it is making a beeping sound.......Can anyone help?

Is it possible to remove the hard drive and check connections, or connect directly to motherboard via SATA or IDE.

No wasnt on,I have taken out of case and it seems fine....tried a new hdd in enclosure...unfortunatly no access to desktop pc atm so i cant try.....Yes a backup of nearly everything bar a few thousand photos :/....any other ideas?

Will have to wait until you can try it yourself or in someone elses PC, quite a few data recovery options available ranging from free shareware to professional data recovery depending on how much you want to pay :)

Download and burn a cd with UBCD and have a play with some of the tools in there. You won't have to boot into windows. Could try diagnosing the problem and repairing if possible or just try to clone and copy what you can off of it. All free tools and software.

If that fails, you could do a search for Professional Data Recovery, some offer free quotes if you send an email and explain what happened.

It might just be that the HDD has come loose from the external caddy. I'd open it up and make sure everything is connected and in the right place.

Grabbing it by the cable may not have been the best thing to do, although reflex would probably have had most of us doing the same. It's possible you've knackered the connector. If the drive was off it should have survived such a small fall. If you can't find anything loose inside the caddie I'd definately try it on another PC before thinking about professional data recovery which can be very expensive. It's aimed at corporate clients and often just not worth it for home users, depending of course on what you have on there.

Guys sorry to rebump this old thread but i was just wondering if anyone else could help in any way...ive just plugged directly into my pc and its making a beeping noise if that helps...thanks again
