would you rather have, 1 500gb drive or 2 250gb. 2 smaller drives in my opinion would be better as if 1 big drive packed in then ALL your data is gone where with 2 smaller drives you only risk loosing *half* of your files.

It depends on the individual, their attitude to risk, their backup strategy and how quickly they need the data back should they loose any.

I have 2 RAID arrays in my PC, one RAID0 which carries the OS and all downloads etc and a RAID5 array which holds everything which has been backed up to DVD-R. The RAID0 array gets sync'd with an external drive at least once a week and anything important also gets stored offsite.

Faced with that decision I'd go with 2x250 unless you need very high data density in your enclosure (be it a case or something else).

i would have 2 x 250, as you say there is always the risk of a HD going down for whatever reason, rather lose half of it then all of it
